We're often fixated on tasks. Jesus is focused on people. It's true that Christ had a mission, and still has more to accomplish in our world. But His mission is the salvation of people; and our world is a world of men and women, boys and girls. The Savior's heart is drawn to our neighbors and our family members. How about our hearts? On Friday Jim began a sermon called Being Good for Nothing. And of course that's taken from Jesus' line, "if the salt should become tasteless, what can make it salt again? It is completely useless." Salt. It's a life-sustaining nutrient, it makes things taste good...and it raises some people's blood pressure. Jesus uses metaphors not just to explain the Kingdom, but to explain us to ourselves. We disciples, He said, are the "salt of the earth." In that time and place, salt was as vital as water - and, as many have pointed out, it was used as a preservative. But even in our hypertensive times the comparison still works; our saltiness will cause an adverse reaction in some. Jim's new sermon is called Being Good for Nothing. He's in Matthew, chapter 5.
