How could a "son of the kingdom" be denied entrance into the Kingdom? Jesus said it will happen! I think I was a very young boy when I first heard, "God has no grandchildren," meaning: the faith and holiness of your parents isn't transferred to you; you have to come into your own relationship with Him. Well, this may not have been so clear to the descendants of Abraham seated on the grass, hearing the Sermon on the Mount live and in person. If "the Kingdom" is not the Kingdom of Israel, then what is it? Pastor Jim continues his thoughts from yesterday in Part 2 of Thy Kingdom Come.

Ask not what your King can do for you; ask what you can do for your King. The crowds wanted Jesus to feed them, heal them, maybe even entertain them with a nice homily. But the spiritual food He was offering made them gag. Here was a different kind of King - not just asking for a ceremonial bow and a few bucks in taxes, but demanding total allegiance right down to the marrow of our bones. God will never ask us to do something He can't do. Oh, the Father will ask us to do plenty that we can't do - forgive others, for example; trust Him for the future, even in a year like this one. His requirements are humanly impossible... but that's how testimonies are made. When we do what we alone can't do, outsiders will have to ask, "How?" And Christians do have better lights, but that isn't the core difference between followers of Jesus, and others.
