It's because, ultimately, cultural wars are about truth - ultimate truth. When you peel back the layers of any given issue, at the root you'll find opposing views of not just morality, but reality. You and I can be sidelined by "side issues." Doubtful things, disputable matters, gray areas. There are issues of conscience on which Christians may disagree. But that doesn't mean they're not important. Paul was concerned about "disqualifying" himself because of these side issues. They're useful to the enemy in the cultural war. Be sure your Jesus is properly secured. We can't have Him running around loose! The cultural war doesn't just stay "out there" somewhere. We can't escape our culture, our society, our "times." In fact, according to some, culture can go places that our faith may not: specifically, the ballot box, and the bedroom. One way to lose the cultural war is to surrender. Over and over again we've seen churches bow the knee to the world's dumb idea du jour - not at gunpoint, not because of threats from the government - just due to social pressure. Universities and organizations that were started long ago by Christians to be a kind of eagle's nest have been turned into snake pits. If we want to win this war, we'll have to get the world out of the church. Let's join Jim in 1 Corinthians.
