Who is the "Servant of the LORD?" In the scroll of Isaiah, Israel is identified as God's servant. And so is David. And the prophet, himself. But when we get to what we call Chapter 53, we see a Servant who could not be any of those; One who bears the sins of others. And that's the section that the Ethiopian Eunuch was reading when a man named Philip ran up. Let's jump in at Acts 8, verse 26, for the middle part of Jim's sermon, The Limits of God's Grace.

God saves some people to show us that He can! In Acts 8 the Lord sends Philip to a specific man, and thoroughly orchestrates his conversion. He was definitely a foreigner. And he was a eunuch, but a politically powerful man; no doubt a rich man. He was just about as far away as he could be, demographically, from the average Christ-follower at the time. The Samaritans proved to be a receptive audience, but there was one problem. And that problem was a person. This guy is known outside the Bible as Simon Magus, or Simon the Sorcerer. He must have astounded the people with tricks that looked like miracles. But when he witnessed the Holy Spirit being given through the hands of the Apostles, he knew he was seeing a real miracle. And even though he'd been baptized, he was still seeing through his old, sorcerer's eyes. We're in Acts, chapter 8 with Jim.

The gospel goes where it's welcome - even to the "wrong side of the tracks." Give the religious elite of Israel their due: they were consistent. They "let their No be No." They refused to listen to John or Jesus or Peter or Stephen. There was no waffling, and no tolerance. It was their way or the highway. But once the Christians were on the highway, the message could go out everywhere... just as the Lord said it would. Pastor Jim's new sermon is called, Meet Philip.

...and then Stephen said the quiet part out loud. You think you revere the Law, but you don't keep the Law. That's the chink in the armor of all legalists, including the Sanhedrin. Stephen stood accused of blaspheming the Law of Moses, but now he's going to put the court on trial. Who was it, really, who was desecrating everything righteous and holy? Stephen's concluding words seem to convey the fury of a God who is fed up.

Are we worshiping -at- the Temple...or are we worshiping the Temple? One of the charges against Stephen was that he "never stops speaking against this holy place." And his defense was to take his Jewish brothers back to first principles. What was the Temple? Had it been God's idea, or man's? Had the people - and the leaders in particular - made it into a kind of box for holding God? Was the Temple important because it honored Yahweh, or because it exalted Israel. There seems to be a pattern here! You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to see the "M.O." of the Hebrews; they had a long history of rejecting their appointed leaders. Stephen is about to school the Sanhedrin. The subject was History, with quite a bit of Geography covered, as well. And it was all reviewed - the students surely knew every one of these facts as well as the teacher did. So what was the point of the lesson, then? Could it be that knowledge is nothing without insight? The Jewish ruling council would have gotten an "A" on one, and an "F" on the other.
