Peter, you got some 'splainin' to do! There were visions, angels, people saved and baptized - and the only news item that made it back to Jerusalem was that Peter had broken bread with non-Jews! Oh, my! The Apostle had been slow to come around to these ideas himself, so he could patiently explain the whole sequence of events. There was only one conclusion: "God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life."

God sent Jesus Christ to Israel... but He is Lord of all. Today we're at Ground Zero of the nuclear explosion that Jim has called, Gentile Pentecost. Peter had requested the kosher meal.... The animals in the sheet in Peter's vision must have looked pretty disgusting to him - almost as revolting as the idea of entering the home of a non-Jew. Peter said, "No!" Cornelius said, "Go!" The Roman centurion Cornelius is an interesting guy. He was not a proselyte to Judaism, but he was far from being a pagan. When he got a message in a vision, he obeyed; he sent a delegation to get Peter. Peter, meanwhile, also had a vision from God. His initial response was, "By no means, Lord!" The prayers and charity of Cornelius were noticed in heaven. But they were not enough to save him! God is going to have to open Peter's mind...slowly. During all of Simon's lifetime, and for many lifetimes before, what we call the "Old" Covenant was the only covenant. And it was an agreement between God, and the people of Israel, alone. It wouldn't be easy to get used to the idea of a covenant open to everyone. Who is farthest from the Kingdom: A Samaritan? A foreigner? Or a religionist? Of course, the correct answer is "c," Saul of Tarsus, Hebrew-of-Hebrews, protégé of Gamaliel... enemy of God and man.
