Some people are willing to trust Jesus unto death...but only unto death. We're used to thinking about death as "the end," but the Lord wants to give us a new perspective, and a new vocabulary to describe it. Jesus boldly says, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live even if he dies." And a few of His followers found faith to trust Him even for the scientifically impossible.

"Crown Him the Lord of Life!" We continue our series on Miracles that Jesus Performed with a look at times He raised people from the dead. This had been seen in Israel before - some of the Old Testament prophets had performed similar miracles - but not on this scale, and not this easily. There was something uncanny about the way Jesus spoke to dead people as if they could hear Him. And apparently they could! He is Master of life and death.

The disciples had problem. But it wasn't they problem they thought they had. After Jesus had miraculously fed the 5,000, and then the 4,000, His associates who had seen all this became worried about bread. The Lord's concern wasn't for their lack of food, but their lack of faith. And we shake our heads at the disciples, as if we don't still worry, even after we have Jesus in our boat. Today we're winding up our message on Miracles with Bread, from the series Miracles that Jesus Performed. We'll open the program with Pastor Jim's comments on the 16th chapter of Matthew.

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day; give him some bread too, and he'll elect you President. The crowds that Jesus fed didn't chew on the fact that, "Here's a man who can control the elements of nature; maybe I should listen to Him." The lesson they took away was, "Free Food." And if we were living hand-to- mouth under the occupation of a foreign army, we might find it hard to look past the immediate gratification of our needs to hear the higher message, too. But Jesus had to shock them out of their meal-ticket theology. In Part 2 of the sermon, Miracles with Bread, Pastor Jim takes us back to John, chapter 6.

Eve and Esau were just two in a long line of people who've sold great blessings for a little bit of food. In our series on Miracles that Jesus Performed we're moving on to those he performed with bread. There's some special symbolism here, as He is the "bread that comes down from heaven." But that abstract imagery is lost on the multitude, who just want their bellies to stop rumbling. We'll look at the "Feeding of the Five Thousand," and a test that Jesus gave His disciples on today's Right Start.

What opened Peter's eyes to the deity of the man sitting on his boat? Fish! Lots and lots of fish. When we think of Jesus' Miracles with Water, the first one that comes to mind might be Him walking on the water - and we'll examine that story today. But yesterday we started to look at the miraculous catch of fish recorded in chapter 5 of Luke's Gospel. So let's pick up that thread again. Boatfulls of fish might not have convinced me that Jesus is God, but I'm not a fisherman. This evidence drove Peter to his knees.

We need to learn to say, "But at Your word...." Yesterday we began a series on Miracles that Jesus Performed with the sermon, Miracles with Water. As we look at the water-turned-to-wine and another miracle of a supernatural catch of fish, we may notice something in common: human obedience. There's humility and an open mind to whatever God is up to. As Mary put it, "Do whatever He tells you." Pastor Jim is commenting on John 2, verse 4 and the meaning of Jesus' line, "My hour has not yet come."

These signs reveal the power and authenticity of the Son of God, but more than that, they reveal His heart for people. There are no gratuitous miracles.
