The rich can never be sure who their true friends are. Wealthy people are unusually popular - it's a strange coincidence, isn't it? They always seem to have an entourage, hangers-on, "staff." And each member will claim to be loyal to the end. Well, Satan thought that God suffered from this problem; that His friends were bought-and-paid-for. "Tell truth, and shame the devil." Job could shame the devil - truly, and in full view of the whole spiritual world - but he was going to have to speak the truth. And keep speaking it despite grief, and pain, and some very bad advice. As we lift our bookmark from Job, chapter 2, God's man has won the contest. But Satan doesn't think the rules were quite fair. Sin, and separation from God weren't the only tragedies that happened in the Garden. When Adam fell, he lost his title deed to the earth, and passed it to the Adversary. This fact colors everything we read in the Bible. Satan was within his rights when he demanded to "sift" Peter - and when he sought to test Job. We would have withered. Job worshiped. We're about to look at the day the bottom fell out of Job's world. He had been protected by some kind spiritual "hedge," as the devil saw it. But the moment that barrier came down Satan attacked, with wave after wave of misery. There was no warning, no explanation, no time to catch his breath between the tsunamis of woe. The devil thought he knew Job better than God does! In the passage we'll look at today, Satan seems to believe that Job was pulling the wool over God's eyes. The arrogance! The delusion! This very warped creature is about to be humiliated, through the test of a pious man. If Job had been warned what was coming, the test wouldn't have worked. And the whole thing was God's idea. "It was a dark and stormy night." "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." "There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job." Our ears perk up when we hear the opening to a story. Almost always, the author begins by setting the scene, and then he or she starts to introduce the characters. Job had no Bible. That doesn't mean he had no revelation. We're spoiled by having easy access to the Scriptures, in so many good translations. And we rely on it as the definitive source for learning what God is like, and what He desires of us.
