Job - A Real Person - Part 1 of 3

Job lived so long ago, in a world so different from ours, that he may seem more like a myth than a man. While it's true that we would be "fish out of water" in Job's time - and he in ours - he was a man, like us. He suffered like us, he struggled to hold on to his faith like us, and he felt alone in that struggle - like us. He got some answers from God that apply to us, as well. Here's Pastor Jim with Part 1 of Job: A Real Person.

I Am So Insignificant

Job wants to debate the Almighty on ethics and morality; God takes him to the zoo! The One who haggled with Abraham, who would invite us through Isaiah to "Come, let us reason together," has no problem with rational discourse. But He's going to have to come down to our level for that. And Job's mental level has dropped, lately. We'd better start with something very simple. Let's talk about the different animals, Job. Here's Jim to open a lesson entitled, I Am So Insignificant.

Why You Have Been Afflicted

We're not strong on the "unknown unknowns." Donald Rumsfeld popularized the idea that we're sure that we know certain things - the "known knowns;" we're aware that we don't know other things - the "known unknowns;" but we must accept the likelihood that we don't even know all the things we don't know - the "unknown unknowns." And this should humble us. Back to the Book of Job, and Elihu with Pastor Jim.

God Will Redeem Me

Job knew more than we may have realized. When times get tough, we often retreat to our basic, rock-bottom truths - the things "we know that we know." In Job chapter 19 the man of God recalls a few of these. "I know," he says, "that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will stand upon the earth." If the translators have trouble with some of that, the general outline is clear: Rescue is coming, and it will be personal. Here's Jim with Part 1 of, God Will Redeem Me.

God's Gift Of Experiences

Eliphaz plays his trump card. As we turn to Chapter 15 of Job's story, all of his friends have given their dismal advice, and Job has responded to each. Here comes Round 2. Eliphaz thinks he'll decide the matter by sharing a private revelation. Personal experiences are powerful, but we have to be careful: not all supernatural encounters are divine encounters. Job's friend had been communicating with the wrong side in the spiritual war.

I Prefer To Speak To God

When we put ourselves in Job's story, are we choosing the right character? It's easy to identify with Job: beset with multiple difficulties, life falling apart, faith on trial. But maybe we fit better as the Counselors - always ready with our canned answers.

How Could All This Happen?

The first thing to know about God is that God is unknowable. "God only knows / God makes his plan / The information's unavailable to the mortal man." I quote theologian Paul Simon because everyone knows that "God works in mysterious ways." Was Job clinging to that anchor as a way to right the ship of his soul? Here's Jim with Part 2 of, How Could All This Happen?

How Can A Person Be Justified Before God?

The connection between suffering and sin is looser than we think. The Disciples met a man born blind and wondered, "Who sinned, this man or his parents?" And you remember what Jesus answered: "Neither." But we're prone to make this same mistake. We assume that calamity must be judgment. That error was exposed in the earliest book of the Bible, the book of Job. Today we open a new sermon from Jim, called: How Can a Person be Justified Before God?

The Theme Of Eliphaz

"True, as far as it goes" doesn't always go far enough. Job's three friends were about to take him to Sunday School! They were sure that "your sins will find you out;" that we will "reap what we sow;" that God will "render to every man according to his works." All true. But their application was faulty because there was a piece of information they didn't have. Pastor Jim will help us find our place in this "dialog in the dust." His sermon is, The Theme of Eliphaz.

Job Curses The Day He Was Born

The rich can never be sure who their true friends are. Wealthy people are unusually popular - it's a strange coincidence, isn't it? They always seem to have an entourage, hangers-on, "staff." And each member will claim to be loyal to the end. Well, Satan thought that God suffered from this problem; that His friends were bought-and-paid-for. As we know, the Lord let the devil test his theory on Job. Today Jim will begin a new sermon called, Job Curses the Day He Was Born.
