Job turns the corner. In Chapter 9 of his book Job's boils are as bad as ever... his children are still dead... his counselors continue to harass him. The first thing to know about God is that God is unknowable. "God only knows / God makes his plan / The information's unavailable to the mortal man." How righteous is "righteous?" Solomon said, "Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins." God had called Job an upright man. But Job knew he wasn't holy enough to call his Maker to account. He asked one of the most important questions ever uttered: How can a human being - a mere man made of mud - be declared right before God? Let's rejoin Jim in the Book of Job, chapter 8. Job feels like an ant under God's magnifying glass. "What is man that You make so much of him, or pay him any mind?" It sounds different coming from David, basking in the blessings of God's attention, than it does from the mouth of Job in the midst of his trials. Job's trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle without all the pieces. We'll hear about that, and the advice of Friend Number 2, Bildad, on today's episode. The connection between suffering and sin is looser than we think. The Disciples met a man born blind and wondered, "Who sinned, this man or his parents?" And you remember what Jesus answered: "Neither." But we're prone to make this same mistake. We assume that calamity must be judgment. That error was exposed in the earliest book of the Bible, the book of Job. Today we open a new sermon from Jim, called: How Can a Person be Justified Before God?

Job came to the point where he saw only one way out. The man of God was being attacked on every level: physically, financially, emotionally, spiritually. He didn't have the comforting scriptures that we have; he didn't know why this was happening to him - he just wanted the pain to stop. The Bible paints its heroes "warts and all," and when Job responds to Eliphaz, we see a real, vulnerable human being at the end of his hope.

"True, as far as it goes" doesn't always go far enough. Job's three friends were about to take him to Sunday School! They were sure that "your sins will find you out;" that we will "reap what we sow;" that God will "render to every man according to his works." All true. But their application was faulty because there was a piece of information they didn't have. Pastor Jim will help us find our place in this "dialog in the dust." His sermon is, The Theme of Eliphaz.

Job wasn't being punished; he was being polished. You're familiar with Nietzsche's saying, "What does not kill me makes me stronger." But that's not always true, is it? Sometimes adversity makes people weaker - or worse, it takes a toll on their faith. But God's purpose is good. We'll learn from Job today that the Lord can use hardship to achieve several positive changes in the lives of His children.
