"Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?" And all 7 billion of us say, "That might be me." This is a refrain in the Book of Job: someone is obscuring the solution, turning truth into error, by spouting his ignorance. But who is it? We could charge Job's three friends with that crime. But he's the one on the stand. Let's back up a bit, to Chapter 41.

Job wants to debate the Almighty on ethics and morality; God takes him to the zoo! The One who haggled with Abraham, who would invite us through Isaiah to "Come, let us reason together," has no problem with rational discourse. But He's going to have to come down to our level for that. And Job's mental level has dropped, lately. We'd better start with something very simple. Let's talk about the different animals, Job. We're not strong on the "unknown unknowns." Donald Rumsfeld popularized the idea that we're sure that we know certain things - the "known knowns;" we're aware that we don't know other things - the "known unknowns;" but we must accept the likelihood that we don't even know all the things we don't know - the "unknown unknowns." And this should humble us. Back to the Book of Job, and Elihu with Pastor Jim.

We may feel like Job sometimes, but we are not Job. That righteous man from Uz had no Scriptures - he would be the first writer of Holy Writ. He saw a distant Redeemer but didn't have any details about Jesus. And of course he didn't have the Spirit of Jesus living inside him. We likely have more encouraging friends, too! We have it a lot better than Job, even when we think we might have it worse. We've skipped to Chapter 28 for the second half of Jim's message, God Will Redeem Me.

Job knew more than we may have realized. When times get tough, we often retreat to our basic, rock-bottom truths - the things "we know that we know." In Job chapter 19 the man of God recalls a few of these. "I know," he says, "that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will stand upon the earth." We won't have much ability to comfort others until we've suffered. 2 Corinthians 1:4 teaches us that the comfort we give is comfort we have received - because we needed it. Job and his companions seem to prove this truth from opposite sides. Yesterday we talked about the mystical experiences of Friend #1, Eliphaz. Eliphaz plays his trump card. As we turn to Chapter 15 of Job's story, all of his friends have given their dismal advice, and Job has responded to each. Here comes Round 2. Eliphaz thinks he'll decide the matter by sharing a private revelation. Personal experiences are powerful, but we have to be careful: not all supernatural encounters are divine encounters. Job's friend had been communicating with the wrong side in the spiritual war.

Some contests aren't decided in regulation play. If justice for Job can't be accomplished in the four "quarters" of his life, maybe there's an "overtime." Perhaps he can get his questions answered after death. In Job's time it's not yet a doctrine; it's more like an inspired wish.
