One thing is for sure: We'll need to be at least as daring in seeking forgiveness as we were in committing the sin. Live Boldly is the sermon we began yesterday. In our study of the book of Hebrews we've found two resources that we want to take with us in our journey toward the "Sabbath rest" of faith. They are the Scriptures, and the Son; or if you like, the written Word and the incarnate Word. Pastor Jim is trying to show us that we can trust these two not to harm us, but to free us. He's in Hebrews, chapter 4.

God tells us to "come boldly to the throne of grace" just when we feel like slinking away in shame. In Hebrews we've been studying rest, and the paradox of expending maximum effort to attain His deeper kind of rest. We'll need faith in His mercy just to keep walking toward Him, when all our instincts tell us to run away. On our side we have the Word of God, and we have the High Priest of God, His Son, Jesus. In his new sermon Live Boldly, Jim will show us how to use these resources.

God has a personality - He has "ways." Today we'll conclude Jim's sermon, Foundations for Fathering, based on Hebrews 3, verses 9 and 10. So far we've said that dads should see the works of God and help their families appreciate them; that they should hear words from God, and respond in faith. Finally, fathers should know the ways of God. We're all to become progressively better acquainted with the patterns of living that please the Lord - and dads are to take the lead in that.

If we're not hearing God, maybe it's because we're not listening! It's easy for us to believe that God spoke to Moses, and to Jesus; but what about to you and me? If we were to hear His voice today, we know we shouldn't harden our hearts - that much we've picked up from Hebrews already. But how do we hear Him? And how do we know it's Him? On today's program Pastor Jim will resume a sermon we started on Friday called, Foundations for Fathering. And as we said then, it's a message for everyone.

If there's one thing our society sorely needs right now, it's godly fathers. "Real men love Jesus," as the bumper sticker says. And a dad who models faith, humility and integrity can leave his children with an indelible picture of the invisible God. For the next few programs it may seem like we're celebrating Father's Day a little early, but it's a message that can benefit everyone. We're still studying the letter to the Hebrews, and Jim will preach on Foundations for Fathering after we enjoy this brief dramatic sketch. Let's listen.

God doesn't sweat! The Almighty is at rest. He lives in a state of confidence, certainty and calm. But of course He is always at work, too. And He invites us to enter into His life of serene, unlabored accomplishment. Today we'll finish the sermon, Give it a Rest! Yesterday Jim had started to outline 3 "faces" of rest when we had to go. The first is salvation; rest from trying to earn our way to heaven. We're in Hebrews 4.

Under Moses a great multitude escaped the land of slavery, but most of them never made it to the place of rest. We're moving forward in our Hebrews series with a message called, Give it a Rest! Jesus said, "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." And we who have responded to His invitation have experienced that rest. But the writer of Hebrews assures us, "there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God." If you would say your life is marked by stress, rather than rest, this word is for you. We'll be in Hebrews 3 and 4 with Pastor Jim.

God had promised the Hebrews a land "flowing with milk and honey," but most of them didn't get what was promised. We should be asking, "What happened?" What happened was repeated faithless responses by the people, which deepened their skepticism and made them finally unable to obtain their rest in the Promised Land. It's a cautionary tale for all of us. Yesterday we opened this message, Diseases of the Heart. The author of Hebrews is trying to convince his readers that they are in danger of repeating the mistakes of their ancestors. Jim has his Bible open to Hebrews 3, verses 5 and 6.

"If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, shall make Myself known to him in a vision. I shall speak with him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses. He is faithful in all My household; with him I speak mouth to mouth...." The audience to whom the book of Hebrews was written revered Moses, and rightly so. But did they actually follow Moses? That was a problem, as we'll see today in Part 1 of the sermon, Diseases of the Heart. The writer wanted to convince Jews that Moses, as great as he was, pointed to Someone greater.

The devil promised Eve, "You will be like God"...but that was God's desire all along. The Lord's way of making us like Him started with Him becoming like us. Then He had to pay our debt. We'll talk a bit about that today. Ultimately, if we allow Him to, God will plant His own nature in us. Yesterday Jim used Jesus' illustration of the vine and the branches to show us the deep interconnection that's necessary for this "nature transfusion" to take place. We're in Hebrews, chapter 2 for the conclusion of One for All and All of One.
