The Goal Is Love - Part 2 of 2

What is the church's first priority? Of course we're called to evangelize, to share the Good News. And we're going to help the needy. But there's something that comes - that must come - before that. Yesterday in our study of 1 Timothy we learned that The Goal is Love. Today we'll look at the proper starting point, to get that result. And we'll notice the different instructions for men and for women, so please give careful attention as Jim concludes this message.

The Goal Is Love - Part 1 of 2

Every once in a while it's good to look up from our everyday tasks and focus again on the Mission Statement. What exactly are we trying to accomplish with all our efforts? Paul wrote to Timothy, “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” Pastor Jim will examine that statement, and he'll show us the 5 "support pilings" on which the pastoral epistles are built. Once we know this outline, we should be able to get a lot more out of the letter of 1 Timothy.

The Burden Of Truth - Part 2 of 2

If the world's worst sinner has received mercy, that should demonstrate God's intentions. God's intentions should be our intentions, and His mission should become our mission. That's part of what Jim has been calling The Burden of Truth. We're studying Paul's first letter to Timothy, and we'll review a little bit of what we heard on the show yesterday. The Apostle feels a duty pressing upon him, and he passes along some of that responsibility to his protégé.

The Burden Of Truth - Part 1 of 2

In Jesus' church, it's not just the "ministers" who are ministers! You, Christian, are a minister - part of that "kingdom of priests" we've read about. We are all under "holy orders." And as ministers, we have certain responsibilities. Maybe this isn't the way we're used to thinking about things, but it's what Paul was outlining to Timothy in his first letter. Today Pastor Jim opens a new message called, The Burden of Truth.

Paul's Concern For Ephesus - Part 2 of 2

We can follow rules, or we can follow Jesus. Christians have to understand what the Law was for, and who it was for. Above all, we shouldn't listen to anyone who arrives with a new list of laws for us to follow! That's what we'll address today. We're studying 1 Timothy, but when we left off on Friday, Jim was giving us some historical background from Acts 20. Paul was warning the elders at Ephesus about what would happen once he was gone. Here's Jim with Part 2 of, Paul's Concern for Ephesus.

Paul's Concern For Ephesus - Part 1 of 2

There have been problems in the church for as long as there have been people in the church! And welcome to a new series called Foundations For a Faithful Church. In the letter of 1 Timothy, Paul lays out principles of good doctrine, good church government, and good conduct inside and outside the assembly. He wrote it because he was beginning to see early warning signs at the church in Ephesus. His years of effort there were in danger of being wasted. Here's Pastor Jim to open his sermon, Paul's Concern for Ephesus.

Persevere Until He Appears

Christians believe that we have eternal life right now, already, as a gift. So what does Paul mean when he tells Timothy to "lay hold of the eternal life...?" Jim will take us back to something we saw earlier in 1 Timothy to answer that question. An accurate understanding of this "life that is truly life" will change our perception, our values, and our investments. We can expect several ideas to click into place as begin the final sermon in this series, Foundations for a Faithful Church.

Contentment - Godly Gain

Caution: You are an eternal being. Your choices today will affect you forever! If Christians pursue the wrong things here and now, we may have little to show for our efforts in our infinite future. Jesus talked about it: "Lay up treasures in heaven...." And Paul reminded Timothy of it in the passage we'll review today. Not only that, he gave Tim some specific goals that we can all chase, rather than money and material wealth. Here's Pastor Jim with Part 1 of a sermon he calls, Contentment: Godly Gain.

Godliness And Contentment

Does God want you to be rich? Do you want to be rich? By just about every measure, Westerners are already rich. So what is it in us, and in our culture, that drives us to crave more - more things, more power? There is danger here. And danger is what drove Paul to pen the letter of 1 Timothy.

For An Audience Of Angels

What happens when - not if, but when - a church leader sins? God is a realist. When He gave us standards for elders and deacons, He also gave us processes for dealing with their failures. And if we would employ those procedures instead of trying to sweep things under the rug, the Lord could use even these faith-shaking episodes of human weakness to redeem and restore people. Now we continue our series in 1 Timothy with the first part of a new sermon from Pastor Jim.
