Life In God's Household - Part 2 of 2

Was Jesus' command to wash each other's feet literal, or metaphorical? Traveling through 1 Timothy, we come upon this requirement for widows who may receive church aid: "...if she has washed the saints' feet...." The Grace Brethren churches and others take this instruction literally, but Jim will add that there's another dimension as well. And it's just one of the attributes of a "genuine widow" that we'll learn about today. We're in 1 Timothy, chapter 5.

Life In God's Household - Part 1 of 2

You are starring in your own "reality" show! As we read further in 1 Timothy, Jim will explain that our lives - and especially our relationships within the church family - are on display to the world. He uses the analogy of a billboard. It's certainly some kind of an advertisement of how the new birth has influenced our behavior. Our doctrinal statements may be fine, but people want to know: how does this work in real life? Jim will start this sermon in 1 Timothy 5, verse 3. It's called Life in God's Household.

Life In The Christian Family - Part 2 of 2

We used to hear, "Charity begins at home." But that's the greeting-card version of a very forceful passage of Scripture. Imagine the fate of an unbeliever...then imagine something worse than that, for someone who denied the faith. That's the position of the person who refuses to help his own relatives. So wrote the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy. Here's Jim to conclude the sermon, Life in the Christian Family.

Life In The Christian Family - Part 1 of 2

"Propriety" is a good old word we ought to bring back. There's something beyond the important distinction of right versus wrong. As we search the pages of Scripture we'll find that God is also concerned for what is appropriate, proper, fitting - giving everyone his or her due. As we live and minister with other Christians, we'll need to orient ourselves to this dimension of relationships. We're moving through Paul's first letter to Timothy, and today Pastor Jim will begin to tell us about Life in the Christian Family.

Living Out Our Sonship - Part 2 of 2

We think of the church as a body, a family, an army, a hospital. We don't often think of it as a support column! "...the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth" were Paul's words. And the truth will need some support, because there will be sinister efforts to undermine it. We're studying 1 Timothy, from chapter 3 into chapter 4, today. But let's refresh our memories with a bit of review from Friday's broadcast.

Living Out Our Sonship - Part 1 of 2

We believe God is able to meet our needs. But do we believe that He has already provided for them? Peter taught that God's "divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness." We'll see today that Paul was right in sync with that message, as we continue our series in 1 Timothy. And this meeting of our needs often happens inside the "family," the "household of God." Pastor Jim will help us examine some of the treasures tightly packed into the last part of chapter 3 of this letter.

Taking Care Of God's Church - Part 2 of 2

Deacon Wanted: No actors need apply. No hypocrites, no members of the wine-of-the-month club, and no greedy guys will be considered. No serial monogamists or new converts, either. It's almost like this deacon position is important! Of course it is, and powerful Christians like Stephen raised the standard very high. Today we'll complete our survey of 1 Timothy 3, and the qualifications for church leadership we find there.

Taking Care Of God's Church - Part 1 of 2

A godly church leader has a target on his back. The overseer of a flock of God's people has the attention of the devil. He's also apt to get criticism from the sheep. Just ask Moses about that one! The character qualifications are high, in part because Satan knows that if he can find a chink in the armor, and tear down the man, he can divide and devastate an entire congregation. We're in 1 Timothy 3, talking about Taking Care of God's Church.

Aspiring To Serve - Part 2 of 2

Teaching, preaching and...double-entry accounting? Early in the life of the church we see a division of labor. Some men were called to feed the sheep, metaphorically; and some were called to distribute the food, literally. There were administrators as well as what we would call "pastors." We'll review Luke's record of how this came to be; then we'll continue through 1 Timothy. Here's Jim with the conclusion of Aspiring to Serve.

Aspiring To Serve - Part 1 of 2

As go the leaders, so goes the church. We could wish that the health of a local assembly didn't depend quite so much on the pastor - who, after all, is only human. But since that is the case, it's important that we understand what makes a good "overseer." That's the biblical job title. It seems to indicate that his primary responsibility will be to manage workers. Paul lays out the qualifications in the letter of 1 Timothy. Today, to start the week, we begin a new sermon from Pastor Jim. It's called, Aspiring to Serve.
