It's hard to get too excited about money when we have a God who "richly supplies us with all things to enjoy!" Love of money binds us to this disposable world. Paul instructs Timothy to pursue real riches, and true life in the everlasting world. Yesterday Pastor Jim was explaining that to "lay hold of eternal life" means, first of all, to believe in the life beyond this one. We're in 1 Timothy 6, verse 19.

Christians believe that we have eternal life right now, already, as a gift. So what does Paul mean when he tells Timothy to "lay hold of the eternal life...?" Jim will take us back to something we saw earlier in 1 Timothy to answer that question. An accurate understanding of this "life that is truly life" will change our perception, our values, and our investments. We can expect several ideas to click into place as begin the final sermon in this series, Foundations for a Faithful Church.

We need to be people of the "bottom line," but with a different equation! The worshipers of Mammon are good at filtering out things that don't matter, and focusing only on the return they'll get. We should be the same way - but of course with the real God and with real riches. Can we train ourselves to look through the lens of, "How will I value this in eternity?" Let's pick up yesterday's theme in 1 Timothy 6, verse 11 with Jim.

Caution: You are an eternal being. Your choices today will affect you forever! If Christians pursue the wrong things here and now, we may have little to show for our efforts in our infinite future. Jesus talked about it: "Lay up treasures in heaven...." And Paul reminded Timothy of it in the passage we'll review today. Not only that, he gave Tim some specific goals that we can all chase, rather than money and material wealth. Here's Pastor Jim with Part 1 of a sermon he calls, Contentment: Godly Gain.

Covetousness may be listed last in the Big Ten sins, but it's certainly not the least of our problems.Sometimes it seems our entire economy is driven by the desire to have more stuff. And the way to get more stuff is with more money. What's worse, churches and ministries have been sucked into this vortex of un-fillable emptiness. If we can lift our eyes higher, as Paul exhorts us, we can be satisfied. Let's resume the sermon we paused on Friday, at 1 Timothy 6, verse 6.

Does God want you to be rich? Do you want to be rich? By just about every measure, Westerners are already rich. So what is it in us, and in our culture, that drives us to crave more - more things, more power? There is danger here. And danger is what drove Paul to pen the letter of 1 Timothy.

"Timothy, there's a letter for you. It's from Paul!" Imagine yourself opening this letter of 1 Timothy for the first time. You would unwind that scroll with anticipation, and maybe a little anxiety: Paul has been known to come down hard on people when he feels they deserve it. As you read, you find encouragement, some important instructions about church business, and some personal notes, too. We'll get all of those in Part 2 of For an Audience of Angels. Please join us in 1 Timothy 5:21.

What happens when - not if, but when - a church leader sins? God is a realist. When He gave us standards for elders and deacons, He also gave us processes for dealing with their failures. And if we would employ those procedures instead of trying to sweep things under the rug, the Lord could use even these faith-shaking episodes of human weakness to redeem and restore people. Now we continue our series in 1 Timothy with the first part of a new sermon from Pastor Jim.

I can tell a lot about you by observing who you honor. In the family of God everyone is welcomed, everyone is respected, supported and loved - but there are those who receive higher esteem than others...because they've earned it. I'm thinking especially about those widows who are living examples to younger women, and about elders who work hard at keeping the family on track. We'll talk about both today, with a bit of review from yesterday' broadcast. Here's Jim, in 1 Timothy, chapter 5 for Part 2 of Ladies Who Lead.

The church should not treat all widows the same! There are widows, and there are widows - as we've gleaned already from 1 Timothy. Actually, there are as many as 5 different kinds of these ladies. Pastor Jim will point them out to us in the next few minutes. If the church treats them all equally, it will burden the church, and even put some women in spiritual danger. This is practical-but-serious stuff we're encountering in Paul's instructions to young Tim. Here's Jim to open a new sermon called Ladies Who Lead.
