Ladies Who Lead

The church should not treat all widows the same! There are widows, and there are widows - as we've gleaned already from 1 Timothy. Actually, there are as many as 5 different kinds of these ladies. Pastor Jim will point them out to us in the next few minutes. If the church treats them all equally, it will burden the church, and even put some women in spiritual danger. This is practical-but-serious stuff we're encountering in Paul's instructions to young Tim. Here's Jim to open a new sermon called Ladies Who Lead.

Life In God's Household

You are starring in your own "reality" show! As we read further in 1 Timothy, Jim will explain that our lives - and especially our relationships within the church family - are on display to the world. He uses the analogy of a billboard. It's certainly some kind of an advertisement of how the new birth has influenced our behavior. Our doctrinal statements may be fine, but people want to know: how does this work in real life? Jim will start this sermon in 1 Timothy 5, verse 3. It's called Life in God's Household.

Life In The Christian Family

"Propriety" is a good old word we ought to bring back. There's something beyond the important distinction of right versus wrong. As we search the pages of Scripture we'll find that God is also concerned for what is appropriate, proper, fitting - giving everyone his or her due. As we live and minister with other Christians, we'll need to orient ourselves to this dimension of relationships. We're moving through Paul's first letter to Timothy, and today Pastor Jim will begin to tell us about Life in the Christian Family.

Living Out Our Sonship

We believe God is able to meet our needs. But do we believe that He has already provided for them? Peter taught that God's "divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness." We'll see today that Paul was right in sync with that message, as we continue our series in 1 Timothy. And this meeting of our needs often happens inside the "family," the "household of God." Pastor Jim will help us examine some of the treasures tightly packed into the last part of chapter 3 of this letter.

Taking Care Of God's Church

A godly church leader has a target on his back. The overseer of a flock of God's people has the attention of the devil. He's also apt to get criticism from the sheep. Just ask Moses about that one! The character qualifications are high, in part because Satan knows that if he can find a chink in the armor, and tear down the man, he can divide and devastate an entire congregation. We're in 1 Timothy 3, talking about Taking Care of God's Church.

Aspiring To Serve

As go the leaders, so goes the church. We could wish that the health of a local assembly didn't depend quite so much on the pastor - who, after all, is only human. But since that is the case, it's important that we understand what makes a good "overseer." That's the biblical job title. It seems to indicate that his primary responsibility will be to manage workers. Paul lays out the qualifications in the letter of 1 Timothy. Today, to start the week, we begin a new sermon from Pastor Jim. It's called, Aspiring to Serve.

The Goal Is Love

Every once in a while it's good to look up from our everyday tasks and focus again on the Mission Statement. What exactly are we trying to accomplish with all our efforts? Paul wrote to Timothy, “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” Pastor Jim will examine that statement, and he'll show us the 5 "support pilings" on which the pastoral epistles are built. Once we know this outline, we should be able to get a lot more out of the letter of 1 Timothy.

The Burden Of Truth

In Jesus' church, it's not just the "ministers" who are ministers! You, Christian, are a minister - part of that "kingdom of priests" we've read about. We are all under "holy orders." And as ministers, we have certain responsibilities. Maybe this isn't the way we're used to thinking about things, but it's what Paul was outlining to Timothy in his first letter. Today Pastor Jim opens a new message called, The Burden of Truth.

Paul's Concern For Ephesus

There have been problems in the church for as long as there have been people in the church! And welcome to a new series called Foundations For a Faithful Church. In the letter of 1 Timothy, Paul lays out principles of good doctrine, good church government, and good conduct inside and outside the assembly. He wrote it because he was beginning to see early warning signs at the church in Ephesus. His years of effort there were in danger of being wasted. Here's Pastor Jim to open his sermon, Paul's Concern for Ephesus.
