The Disciples disbelieved, too - until they could no longer deny! It's a mistake to dismiss the four Gospels as ahistorical because their authors were biased. Yes, they were biased - they're quite open about that. But they were originally skeptical of Jesus' resurrection. They believed only after they were forced out of their doubt by the same evidence they'd like to show you. Before we get to that, let's think more about the signs in the Passover. This faith is built on facts! Lots of people have the idea that belief is something outside the world of observable data and testable hypotheses. And to them, this means that faith is built on nothing. Nothing solid, anyway. It's basically just a preference. But Christian faith is not like that at all. There are a lot of religions in the world. How can we know we've picked the right one? Skeptics seem to think that all belief systems make roughly the same claims, and have roughly the same evidence to show for those claims - that is to say, none. But neither of those is true. "Come together," or "Come out from among them?" Christian unity is a wonderful ideal. And it's easier to achieve than we might think. But where's the line between accepting another brother's peculiar ways, and accepting those who really aren't brothers? Our oneness is divisive. Christianity is inclusive; it's a faith open to anyone. But some call it exclusive for having standards. Those of us who share the life of God are united in a way that an outsider can't imagine... and that unity must repel those who want to reimagine Jesus and His church. There are no fruitless Christians! On today's edition we'll think some more about Jesus' illustration of the Vine and the Branches. Those who abide in Him can't help but be changed as His life flows through them.That transformation is the "fruit," and the Lord will tell us how to do the "abiding" here in John, chapter 15. Let's check our connections! If we want to receive the "juice" from Jesus - the energy, the life, the whatever-He-has-to-give-us - then we need to be sure of two things: First, that we're plugged into the right Vine.There are counterfeits, you know. And second, that we're not leaking. We want that connection to be "right and tight." The Master explained these things privately to His closest friends, and John preserved His words for us. Lazarus is not a fictional character. If we were inventing this story, we might have Lazarus die suddenly. Jesus hurries to the gravesite, waves His magic staff over the tomb, says, "Abracadabra," and the living man now stands in front of Him in a dazzling white robe. None of that happened. "I'm happy to be too late!" The story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead has several plot twists, as Jim will point out in this sermon called, Truth and Tears. The first of these "curves in the road" is the Lord's delay. His close friends in Bethany were counting on Him to come through for them - to come through just in the nick of time, perhaps. "God is always on time," we hear. But then He wasn't. Intentionally. And that hurts, for a time.

"You do not believe, because you are not of My sheep." If you were with us on Friday you'll remember that we're not talking about sheep vs. goats in John 10, but about regular sheep and special sheep: Jesus' sheep. The parable of the Good Shepherd comes across a bit differently when we hear it in context. The illustration has a sharp point, and it was aimed straight at the Jewish leaders.
