The Quick Fix - Part 2 of 2

In the Kingdom, doing the right thing is not enough! It's possible to do the right thing for the wrong reason. Under the Old Covenant it must have happened all the time. But as we've explored the Sermon on the Mount, we've learned that Jesus is very concerned with our motives - what's going on in the deep recesses of our hearts. We're all jonesing for approval. Jesus told us to beware the quick fix! As social beings, we need feedback from others. Only sociopaths really don't care at all what anyone thinks about them. But we have to be careful where we seek our applause. If we want to hear that "Well done, thou good and faithful servant" one day, we'll be giving up some praise from our fellow humans now. To warped human beings, righteousness is a kind of puzzle. When we first learn that there is a moral law, we respond, "I wanna do it myself!" And then we fail. Eventually we'll quit in despair, or we may get creative in how we "interpret" what God says. The Law of God is like the law of gravity: You don't break it; it breaks you. In our post-reality world people think that all rules are arbitrary... that God could just as well have said, "Lie all you want to, and sleep around - it's fun!" But the moral law is as solid as a steel guardrail, and the consequences for breaking it are as real as the rocks at the bottom of the canyon. When we realize this and try to live by God's words, another problem pops up.
