We can't love everything! We cannot serve two masters, and we can't have more than one "top priority." It turns out that love, likewise, is a zero-sum game. If we want to truly love people, then our love for things will take a severe blow. Pastor Jim will relate some personal examples. How do I know I'm saved? If the most important question to every human being is, "What must I do to be saved (to be right with God, and reconciled to Him)?" then isn't this basically the same question from the reverse angle? "How do I know?" After we've repented, believed the gospel, been baptized... how do we know that all of that was real? Especially since we know that the heart is deceitful? Jim has the answer to that most important question in the sermon we begin today.

God loves you; it's true. But does God forgive everyone He loves? Heaven's forgiveness isn't based on love, it's grounded in justice. God's love for you and me compelled Him to send a Ransom, a Redeemer, a Rescuer. But those who refuse to be rescued will perish - despite God's great love for them. SINNERS ON STRIKE AGAINST GOD! Labor stoppages have been in the news lately. The strikers' goal is to force Management to change its ways. Well, many people seem to have a similar strategy for dealing with God. Let there be light! Light is among the earliest of God's creations, and light is the first test of authentic Christianity that John mentions. If we are "sons of light," as another Apostle put it, then our new nature should reveal us to be good, candid, and life-giving. And those will be some of the first attributes that come to mind when people think of us. We're resuming our discussion from Friday. Are you saved? Am I saved? How can we know for sure? Yes, we can know that we belong to Jesus, and we don't have to rely on our fluctuating feelings. The Apostle John gave us some tests that we can use for that. We may be shocked at the things John does not consider to be marks of authenticity; our baptism as a baby, church membership, or even responding to an altar call at a crusade. His first test has to do with our conduct.
