Philip was a chosen man, a gifted leader, and a powerful preacher...but there were some things he couldn't do. As we leaf through the book of Acts we see ordinary Christians doing extraordinary things. But we also see some privileges reserved for the 12 Apostles, or maybe even for Peter. The organizational chart of the early church didn't have a lot of levels to it - but it wasn't entirely "flat," either. At the entrance to heaven, no one will ask to see your passport! God doesn't care about your country of origin, your language, or even your race - note that one. Did the Sanhedrin intend to fulfill a prophecy of Jesus? No way! But that's what they did. Acts of hatred often backfire upon the hater, but the episode we're about to study must be enshrined in the Unintended Consequences Hall of Shame. After Stephen's murder, which we've just read about in the book of Acts, the ruling council determined to use any means necessary to stamp out this "gospel." They didn't realize they would be spreading the gospel.

The Patriarchs despised Joseph and his dreams - before they bowed to him. Israel rejected Moses - before they revered him. Do you see a pattern here? When the Jewish leaders spurned and killed their Messiah, they were acting according to type. And if the symbolism holds, they will one day bow before Him. Who's on trial here, anyway? Stephen is the one supposedly "in the dock," accused of several counts of blasphemy in the first degree. Never underestimate the value of a good waiter! I'm sure the Apostles meant no offense when they said, “It is not right for us to neglect the Word of God in order to wait on tables." After all, the job requirements for these servers included: a good reputation, wisdom, and a Spirit-empowered life. And the 7 successful applicants became models of godliness and courage. If I were to use the phrase, "second Pentecost," you might think of Acts 10, and the Spirit falling on the household of Cornelius and the Gentiles.
