The early church was going to have to break free of its parochialism if it was to survive - and grow! Of course when God poured out His grace on the Gentiles, there was pushback. Some cherished distinctions were about to be lost. Peter defended the church's new inclusivity with three points: First, that the Holy Spirit had treated everyone the same... When God promised, "I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh" - He was serious about that? Well, not ALL flesh, of course - the Holy Spirit isn't going to fall on unholy vessels - on unbelievers. So when the Jewish disciples saw Gentiles being immersed in the Holy Spirit, there was only one conclusion to be drawn: these Gentiles are saved. That's Peter's argument in Acts 11.

Peter brought information to Cornelius. The Spirit brought transformation. We've been talking about the historic meeting that took place when the Jewish delegation - Peter and some brothers from Joppa - brought the message of Christ to the Roman soldier Cornelius. Peter shared one truth he had just learned, himself: that the important division isn't between Jew and Gentile; but between the unbelieving, and the forgiven. There was an enormous spiritual earthquake. The epicenter: Caesarea. We would have set modest goals for the first meeting between the Apostle Peter and the Gentile Cornelius. Set foot inside the door, shake hands, have a photo op. Baby steps. But God had something much bigger in mind for that gathering. And it started to unfold when Peter began to speak. After Peter raised a woman from the dead, he was involved in an even bigger miracle! Don't you love it when your kids quote the rules back to you? "But you said...!" The distinctions between clean and unclean animals, and clean and unclean people, came from God. Could God work outside our preconceptions? As much as we talk about "thinking outside the box," the box remains. We are limited creatures with brain damage from the Fall. So from time to time the Creator is going to stun us with how expansively He thinks and operates. Peter was about to get that kind of surprise. An angel once blocked Balaam's donkey on the road. In Acts 9, Jesus appears to another donkey. The donkey in question, of course, is Saul of Tarsus. Zeal without grace is a deadly combination. Killing to defend God is a very strange idea to us. But it wasn't so bizarre to first century Israelites - the idea, at least.
