When we talk about "The Rich Man and Lazarus," we're leaving someone out. Now, the rich fellow had never struck up a conversation with Lazarus while the two were alive - and apparently he didn't have any practice at talking to God, either. So in Hades he addresses himself to the man who seems to be in charge: Father Abraham. He's the third man in the story. Jesus spoke this illustration for the benefit of His disciples. You had one job! The master left his servants with a lot of money. And they understood the assignment: Grow this! You only worry about money if you don't have a rich dad. Covetousness. Greed. Avarice. It's no way to live. And Jesus showed just how pointless it is, with His story about the Rich Fool. Who or what competes with Jesus for our hearts? In the parables in Luke 14, the Lord compares us to builders and kings: All must make clear-eyed assessments before we commit to a life-altering course of action.
