Daniel - The Final Chapter

Where's the beef? If you've been studying the book of Daniel with us, you may have noticed that we took a bite out of chapter 10, and then we nibbled at chapter 12. We're missing something in the middle! Just like a hamburger, the important part is what's in between the outer layers! That's where we'll be today; in Daniel 11. The sermon was prompted by a question about something we read last time. It's the prophecy: "When the power of the holy people is shattered, all these things will be completed." Here's Jim, to explain.

Daniel's Heavenly Messengers

Sometimes the messenger is more important than the message. Daniel had interpreted the dreams of kings; he had had his own dreams. He had seen visions. He had interviewed angels about the visions. But beginning in Chapter 10 of his book brother Daniel, now a senior citizen, records a very different kind of spiritual experience. It's extremely detailed and far-reaching. And who is that heavenly visitor? Here's Jim with Part 1 of, Daniel's Heavenly Messengers.

Daniel Looks To The Future

The exile was almost over. Surely good times lay ahead! God gave Daniel a glimpse of the future, and it wasn't pretty. It contained persecution and "desolations." The man who had been "standing on the promises" for 7 decades was brought low. How could he process the difficult revelations that came to him? We know the answer to that: He prayed.

Daniel's Prayer

"For I know the plans that I have for you...." One of the most comforting promises in the Bible is found in Jeremiah 29: "'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.'" We know the verse, but do we know the context? It's right in the middle of Jeremiah's prophecy of a 70-year exile. Daniel was moved less by the general words of encouragement, and more by the math.

Daniel - Kings, Prayer And Lions

The satraps set a trap! In Daniel, chapter 6, we "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." There was a different king on the throne, but not much would change except the language on the road signs. The bureaucracy would carry on, of course, and the Hebrew captive Daniel would still be part of it. And once again the cream would rise to the top. But, as you may have noticed, people of mediocre ability don't appreciate those with an "excellent spirit."

Daniel Has A Second Vision

The ram, the goat, and the angel! Do you believe the old saying that, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall?" If it's true, then we should expect the most powerful kingdoms to crash the hardest of all. That should sober-up even the most power-drunk rulers, like Belshazzar of old - and like some of ours, today. Daniel foresaw the destruction of a mighty empire. It was symbolized by the clash between two animals... and explained by an angel.

Daniel Receives A Vision

A revelation from God will change how you feel! We live in a culture obsessed with emotions. If anyone could empathize with Daniel as he's knocked sideways by a divine dream, it's us. What he saw was powerful. He described his emotional state as "troubled," "alarmed," even "terrified." What was this shocking dream? We'll sneak up on it gradually in this message from Pastor Jim. It's called, Daniel Receives a Vision.

Daniel Aids The Kings

The king who became a beast. Nebuchadnezzar didn't "lose his mind;" he threw it away. He forfeited his sanity when he refused to humble himself before God. As Paul would write to the Romans much later, "...since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind...." So Daniel, chapter 4 isn't just a story about one, proud king, long ago. It's the story of all of humanity. Jim will open this sermon with prayer.
