The beautiful thing about running the race set before us, or "pursuing the Promise" is that the race isn't finished yet! We are heading for maturity, which implies that God understands we aren't mature right now. His expectations are realistic. We sometimes endure suffering because we don't have much choice. But Jesus did have a choice, and He chose the Cross. You can be honest with me, it's just us here: Do you feel a little weary? Like you've lost heart? The writer of Hebrews has the antidote for that! In the Faith Hall of Fame we've read about Noah and Abraham and Joseph - all these larger-than-life heroes. But the One we sometimes forget is Jesus. After all, He's God; He had an unfair advantage in the Faith Games. Not so, says our author. Jesus is the One enshrinee we should most "consider." Here's Pastor Jim.

Many of us have a particular spot where we want to be buried. It makes a statement about "home" and "kin." Joseph chose a burial plot that would require a miracle! Joseph's faith extended beyond his own life. He believed even in promises God had spoken to Abraham, his great-grandfather! So he spoke confidently about a time 400 years in the future when Israel would leave Egypt. He wanted to go with them - what was physically left of him. When Joseph lay on his deathbed, he wasn't looking back upon a life of dreams fulfilled, Prime Minister of Egypt, savior of the whole region; he was looking forward. If anyone could have been satisfied with himself on the threshold of the next life, Joseph could have been. Pastor Jim will remind us of some of the crises this dreamer met with faith and integrity. But Joseph had more dreams, about the future of the nation. And not the nation of Egypt; the nation of Israel. We're in Hebrews 11 again, with Jim.

"Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." Paul wrote it, but Abraham showed us how it's done! We could probably have a lively discussion of the latest hit TV series or the hot hashtag of the moment - and that's not necessarily a good thing. Abraham didn't get caught up in his culture. Yesterday Jim said that the first thing to note about this Father of Faith is that he was called by God, and obeyed. Second, that he lived in the Promised Land as a pilgrim. What we think of as the "Promised Land" was just the little promise! We've been walking through Hebrews 11, and in that list of faith heroes, perhaps none is greater than Abraham. The writer shows us that this towering patriarch was looking forward to more than just a large tract of real estate. He was focused beyond that, to a heavenly homeland. There's a popular idea that history goes in cycles - that this generation is no different than others. But the Bible says that's a lie. Peter used the flood of Noah to prove that history is not a circle, but a line - a line ending in judgment.
