How can I be out of money if I still have checks left? That joke feels a little dated in these days when many people don't even have a checking account. But it's easier than ever to pile up debt, sometimes without even knowing it. Are we in debt to God, maybe without knowing it? That's one reason Paul wrote his letter to the Romans: to show that all of us are hopeless debtors to God; and that He has given us a solution. Yahweh, the LORD is my shepherd.... When Jesus called Himself the "Good Shepherd," He was appropriating one of the more beautiful poetic pictures of God. If we listen very carefully in our times of prayer, we may hear the heartbeat of God! Jesus, our model, found time to be alone with the Father often. His practices of prayer and Scripture reading gave Him discernment - to the point that He understood not only what He was to do, but when He was to do it. "Here, let me show you." When we're instructing a child (or anyone) on how to do a certain task, at some point we may realize that it would just be easier to demonstrate, than explain. And among all the benefits Jesus brought us, starting with salvation, we shouldn't forget His example. He taught us how to please God mostly by living out the lesson. A sick woman. A Roman centurion. A group of boisterous children. What do these have in common? We could add to that list a foreigner, a poor widow, and a politician! Each of those people brought joy or refreshment to Christ.Those closest to Him often caused Him pain - and that's why we're studying Jesus: The Sufferer, in the sermon we'll finish up today. By looking at our Lord we can learn not only how to suffer, but how to bring delight to Him.

Jesus' suffering didn't begin at the Cross. We can get the idea that, because Christ is divine, He was insulated from all the psychological trauma that we go through. Insults, rejections, betrayals - these are nothing to the transcendent Son of God... right? If we read the Gospels carefully we'll see the portrait of a man who could be hurt. A "man of sorrows."

You've been served! Yesterday we began looking at the different ways that Jesus met the needs of people, as preserved for us in Mark's Gospel. This king serves! The whole point of being the top dog - judging by our earthly examples - is to get what you want, do what you want, and have others wait on you hand and foot.
