The Purpose Of Parables - Part 2 of 2

Some people find faith, only to lose it before they pull out of the parking lot. And some people are fair-weather Christians; fine until things get rocky. Some are worldly, and get pulled away. But some are the kind of believers we want to be, who stay rooted in truth and bear fruit. Jesus' Parable of the Sower explains why so many don't endure till the end. Pastor Jim is reading from Matthew 13, verse 18.

The Purpose Of Parables - Part 1 of 2

How do you get word to your allies when your enemies are listening? You speak in code! Parables aren't exactly "code," but when presented expertly, they can serve the purpose of enlightening insiders, while keeping outsiders in the dark. And Jesus was the expert's Expert at parables. Again, Matthew connects the dots back to Old Testament prophecy, to remind us that this is exactly what we could expect Messiah to do. Continuing in the first Gospel, here's the beginning half of Jim's sermon, The Purpose of Parables.

Tips From An Insider

As Matthew begins to wrap up his case for Jesus being the Jewish Messiah, he leaves a few loose ends.... There are some head-scratchers in the final section of the Gospel according to Matthew, and Jim will point out a few of them - for example, that detail about other dead people coming out of their tombs at the Lord's resurrection. You may remember that, at the very beginning of our study, Jim taught us to look for the phrase, "When Jesus had finished" this or that - it indicates that we're entering a new section. Here's Part 1 of Tips from an Insider.

The Big One

The Bible warns of future devastation, and most people don't take it all that seriously. But when science warns of coming catastrophe ... no, they don't pay much attention then, either. There were some people who did listen to insights about the end times: the Disciples. They wanted to know, "When will these things take place?" Pastor Jim will help us fit Jesus' answer into the prophetic timetable. We'll be in Matthew's Gospel, chapter 24.

Woe To You

It was the Question to End All Questions. Whose son is the Messiah; David's, or God's? Jesus' puzzler would expose the Pharisees' one dimensional understanding of God's Word. But make no mistake: this was no academic exercise, no battle of the Bible nerds. With this question the Lord would demolish the main accusation against Him: blasphemy. Here's Jim with some context for this confrontation.

Well What Do You Think?

The 3 synoptic Gospels - Matthew, Mark and Luke - are similar. But today we'll look at some material unique to Matthew. As we re-live history from a Disciple's perspective, we've come through the gates of Jerusalem in the manner, and on the exact date, prophesied. Just a few days from now the religious leaders will take drastic steps to solve their "Jesus problem." Right now we live in the tension of this moment, between Palm Sunday and Good Friday. We'll be in Matthew 21, after Jim opens with a story.

The Gift Of A Ransom Paid

Before they were called Christians, believers were derided as "Nazarenes." Many saw them as a breakaway sect of Judaism. Matthew argues that Jesus had not preached anything contrary to Jewish law - as prescribed by God. Rather, He had fulfilled Hebrew prophecy. A son or daughter of Abraham who found the Messiah wasn't a former Jew, but a "completed Jew," to use a modern term. We studying the first Gospel with Pastor Jim.

First Shall Be Last

When God lavishes unearned rewards on others, how does that make you feel? Jesus used a parable to illustrate His answer to Peter about the payment he could expect, working for the King. That pay day will have a surprising twist; there's a bonus coming that's totally at the Master's discretion. We'll be in Matthew 19 and 20 today for the opening of Jim's sermon called, First Shall Be Last.
