Daniel prophesied the exact day that Messiah would come. We should know that date, and more importantly, the nation of Israel should have known that date. The clock started when a Persian king gave the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. And exactly 483 years later, all of Israel should have been looking for their King. Only one person in history could have fulfilled that prophecy. Here's Jim in Matthew 21.

Before they were called Christians, believers were derided as "Nazarenes." Many saw them as a breakaway sect of Judaism. Matthew argues that Jesus had not preached anything contrary to Jewish law - as prescribed by God. Rather, He had fulfilled Hebrew prophecy. A son or daughter of Abraham who found the Messiah wasn't a former Jew, but a "completed Jew," to use a modern term. We studying the first Gospel with Pastor Jim.

It's like when Mom asks your boss to give you a promotion. Were James and John embarrassed that their mother asked Jesus for preferential treatment for them? Probably. Did they go along with the idea? Yeah. They did. But before we get to that part of Matthew's narrative, let's finish up what we started talking about yesterday: the Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard. Here's Pastor Jim, in Matthew 20.

When God lavishes unearned rewards on others, how does that make you feel? Jesus used a parable to illustrate His answer to Peter about the payment he could expect, working for the King. That pay day will have a surprising twist; there's a bonus coming that's totally at the Master's discretion. We'll be in Matthew 19 and 20 today for the opening of Jim's sermon called, First Shall Be Last.

Hiding in the question, "What good thing must I do...?" there's an assumption. The assumption is that we can do something that God would recognize as "good." But Paul wrote, "Nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh...." The unregenerated person doesn't have any good to offer God. And there are many these days like the Rich Young Ruler, who don't know where real goodness comes from. We're in back Matthew 19 today, with Pastor Jim.

I'll make you a deal: For you - today only - All Commandments Half Off! If 10 whole commands are too many, how about 5 - would you keep 5? If your soul depended on it? No? Well, how about just one? Jesus planted a new thought in the mind of the Rich Young Ruler: What if the self-made road to heaven is a dead end? Here's Jim to open the sermon, Surprised by Grace.

Did you know you can obey all the rules, and still lose the game? The Rich Young Ruler was smart enough to realize that his resources, plus his religious deeds, didn't add up to righteousness. He was going to come up short with God, and he knew it. But he didn't know what to do about it. So he asked Jesus. That interview comes later in Matthew 19. We'll start in verse 9, with Jesus correcting some bad ideas about divorce.

The Pharisees tried to stump Jesus with a question about divorce - but they weren't prepared for His answer! The Disciples, too, were caught off guard with the Lord's response. In a few sentences Christ set all of us straight about the divine design of marriage, the real root of the divorce problem, and the inspiration of the Scriptures. We've been "Walking Along with Jesus," and today we turn to a new chapter in our Matthew series.

Resentful, bitter people are torture to be around. They're just the worst. People who forgive are the greatest. Yesterday we started talking about humility as the measure of a person's rank in the kingdom of God. Today we'll see how humility blossoms into forgiveness, forgiveness into warm relationships, and then those relationships demonstrate God's character to the world. That's pretty great! Here's Jim in Matthew 18.

Muhammad Ali famously said, "I am the greatest." But Jesus said that the humblest is the greatest. We're still not very good at this, are we - at appraising a person's "greatness" by his or her level of humility? We tend to think of a "great" person as the one who is accomplished or talented or influential, not in the terms that Christ laid out in Matthew 18. Here with a reminder, and some explanations, is Pastor Jim.
