Sons, Citizens & Sufferers - Part 2 of 2

The existence of one righteous person confronts, and condemns, the world. Christ and Christians are hated because we prove that truth exists. And God exists. And He has a claim on us. No postmodern atheist can stand that. Nor was godliness popular in the first century, as we've been learning from 1 Peter. Here's Pastor Jim with the second half of his message, Sons, Citizens and Sufferers.

Sons, Citizens & Sufferers - Part 1 of 2

Jesus had warned His followers they would be hated. And they were. Our early brothers and sisters were driven from their homes for their faith. They were probably confused and disheartened. Peter took up his pen to encourage them, and to give them, and us, the bigger picture. Here's Jim with Part 1 of Sons, Citizens and Sufferers.

Tips To Insiders

Manhattan Project scientist Richard Feynman said that anyone is qualified to judge the scientific evidence - but "we must listen to all the evidence." A refusal to "listen to all the evidence" has brought error to courts, to journalism, and even to the church. As Peter was penning his final words, he saw that Christians would be tempted to lose heart when the Bridegroom was delayed a long time. So he reminded us of that piece of physical, scientific evidence that many pretend not to see. Jim is in 2 Peter, chapter 3 today to open his sermon, Tips To Insiders.

Don't Be Had

God hates false teaching - and false teachers! Some people say we shouldn't get hung up on doctrine; let's concentrate on loving people and living out the gospel. But Peter might answer, "Which gospel?" Our beliefs matter because they're the source of our actions. In the passage we'll study today the Apostle draws a composite sketch of the most vile of all sinners: those who convince others that sin isn't sin. Here's Jim to warn us, Don't Be Had.

The Blessing Of The Barrels

Orange barrel season is in full bloom in Ohio. And that's...good? No traveler likes to see the dreaded traffic cones, the barrels, the signs of construction. They restrict us. They slow us down. But maybe we don't like them because we haven't thought about what driving would be like without them. Jim may not convince you to love highway maintenance today, but he'll share a potent metaphor about warning signs, and the people who would remove them. We continue through 2 Peter with a message called The Blessing of the Barrels.

Dads And Doubts

When Peter knew he was about to die, he wrote down some final instructions. At the end, the Apostle wasn't thinking about how to divide his worldly goods - if he had any. He was concerned about the coming attacks on the flock of God, and how to prepare believers to weather the storm. Right to the end he was obeying that bittersweet command of Jesus: "Feed my sheep." Jim preached this sermon on a Father's Day, but we think just about any believer will get something out of it. Here's the opening of his message, called Dads and Doubts.

Doing What Comes Naturally

"Promises, promises." Human promises are pretty much worthless - they're "made to be broken," we say, from bitter experience. But the value of the promise depends on the character of the promise maker! The Apostle Peter urges us to stake everything on the promises of God! These "precious and magnificent" promises are the key to our escape. What do we have to escape from? From ourselves; from our own corrupt nature. Today Pastor Jim will open a sermon in 2 Peter called Doing What Comes Naturally.
