But when it's God's performance and God's guarantee - well, now! We're talking about an investment opportunity in the most "disruptive" disruption ever imagined: a new heaven and a new earth. Manhattan Project scientist Richard Feynman said that anyone is qualified to judge the scientific evidence - but "we must listen to all the evidence." A refusal to "listen to all the evidence" has brought error to courts, to journalism, and even to the church. As Peter was penning his final words, he saw that Christians would be tempted to lose heart when the Bridegroom was delayed a long time. Hell is dark. And some of it is darker than dark. "The blackness of darkness," "thick gloom of darkness," "utter darkness." Translators struggle to express a phrase used by both Peter and Jude to describe the place reserved for fake preachers. Who are these people, and how can we avoid their heresies, and their fate? God hates false teaching - and false teachers! Some people say we shouldn't get hung up on doctrine; let's concentrate on loving people and living out the gospel. But Peter might answer, "Which gospel?" Our beliefs matter because they're the source of our actions. You have a place reserved! - but where? Everyone and everything is all jumbled up, now. The wicked may seem righteous, and even blessed. The humble and faithful are often reviled as "intolerant." But God is going to sort everything out. Peter gives 3 historical examples of the Great Judge designating some for punishment, and others for rescue, even though the sentence was delayed. Orange barrel season is in full bloom in Ohio. And that's...good? No traveler likes to see the dreaded traffic cones, the barrels, the signs of construction. They restrict us. They slow us down. But maybe we don't like them because we haven't thought about what driving would be like without them. Jim may not convince you to love highway maintenance today, but he'll share a potent metaphor about warning signs, and the people who would remove them. Peter didn't believe in infallible men. He believed in an infallible Book. When we paused our study of 2 Peter on Friday, we were just about ready for his fourth piece of evidence that should give us an unshakeable faith. It's the most powerful proof of all, and it's the Word of God, the Bible. Our faith isn't built on an Apostle, or all the Apostles, as important as they are. It's built on something eternal. When Peter knew he was about to die, he wrote down some final instructions. At the end, the Apostle wasn't thinking about how to divide his worldly goods - if he had any. He was concerned about the coming attacks on the flock of God, and how to prepare believers to weather the storm. Right to the end he was obeying that bittersweet command of Jesus: "Feed my sheep." When God gave His only-begotten Son, He wasn't done giving!
