Jude wants to outfit us with spiritual sonar. Even in the church, where we feel we have a safe harbor, there may be dangers below the surface. In his letter Jude calls them "hidden reefs." They're people who may smile and talk like Christians, but who have their own agenda underneath. If we don't steer clear, these reefs will split the ship of Fellowship apart. God hates sin. But there's something He hates even more! There is garden-variety wickedness; and then there's the kind of evil that masquerades as righteousness, and even recruits others to sin in the name of God. Already in the first century there were teachers like this, those who contort the grand gift of grace into permission to please ourselves. Jesus is not their Lord, Jude says.
