This is no movie. The images we see in the middle chapters of Revelation are so horrifying that even the most jaded Hollywood filmmakers can't portray it.The suffering and destruction are beyond human imagination. The word of the day is "gestalt." That great German word is about the overall impression we get from a large work - zooming out from the individual pieces to see the "30,000-foot view." God's gifts of forgiveness and reconciliation could be called a "limited time offer." For 2,000 years we've been waiting. And that's given skeptics ample opportunity to sneer about God's "delay." God loves humanity; God will judge humanity. "For God so loved the world..." begins our favorite verse, "that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." The clear implication is that those who choose not to believe, will perish. And we see at least part of what that means, in the passage we'll examine today. Seven seals, seven trumpets, seven bowls. The judgments of God are perfect. And when the last bowl, or vial, of His wrath is poured out, those punishments will be complete. We'll look at the lion's share of these judgments on today's program. There's nothing haphazard in these expressions of divine anger. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away. We're not exactly studying Revelation; we're studying how to study Revelation! And the title of the lesson that we'll begin today comes from Jesus' words, "Heaven and earth shall pass away." All of the things that seem absolutely permanent to us will collapse, be destroyed, disappear. That's hard to imagine. But the Apostle John writes of a time when God has had enough.
