Unity is a tricky thing. If you look up "unity" in the dictionary you'll find descriptors like "oneness" - and also words like "harmony." One definition excludes anything with distinct elements; other definitions require distinct elements to create the "accord" of unity. So Christians aren't making things up when we insist that God's oneness is the second kind of unity: unity of plurality. If there were only a verse or two about plurality within the One God, we could explain them away. In fact, all through the Bible - in both testaments - there's something going on here. The text leaves zero room for doubt about God's unity. Then, as we keep reading, we find references to the Son of a Father; a Lord, and a Lord; a God...with a God! We can have unity because of the unity within the Godhead. Our unity, with the Lord and with each other, has a purpose. From the very beginning; Genesis 1 - or even before the beginning - God has had a plan for us.
