To get to the next level in our spiritual development, first we need to recognize that there is a "next level." Maybe we think that "ambition" must be a bad thing. Or that, once we're born again, we're just hanging around waiting for the Rapture. Yesterday Jim began a message designed to correct that kind of thinking. We end our study of the book of Hebrews where we began: with a call to move up higher! The Christian life should be a life of growth. When an infant doesn't grow, that's cause for alarm; the baby is sick. So our author has responded to that alarm. He has made the case for busting out of the swaddling clothes of the Old Covenant, strapping on our baby shoes, standing upright, and putting one foot in front of the other in the spiritual dimension of the New Birth. If you're not under the care of a shepherd, are you really a sheep? Hebrews teaches us that we have direct access to God - no priestly intermediary required. But that isn't to say that we won't need pastors and teachers, and even "rulers." in the church. These guardians and guides are Those Who Must Give Account.

Fornication and covetousness seem like old-fashioned words for old- fashioned ideas about morality. But these still devastate families. We started talking about moms yesterday, coming up on our national holiday honoring fathers! Well, "it takes two to tango," and the Bible is very frank about marriage and the marriage bed. This is an area where ignoring God's will often hurts innocent people, including children. We're in Hebrews 13, and here's Jim with Part 2 of Love Matters to Mom.

Father's Day is coming up. So today we'll focus on...mothers! The first 12 chapters of Hebrews concern our relationship with God. In chapter 13 our author pivots to our relationships with each other. At Mount Sinai humans encountered God in fear. "Terror" would be a better word. Mount Zion, in contrast, is a place of celebration! The writer of Hebrews exposes the foolishness of trying to go back to the old religious system, with an illustration. Sinai is a nice place to leave. As for destination spots, you want a mountain symbolizing joy and fellowship and ultimate victory. That's Zion. Jim's message is called Unshakeable Hope, and we'll hear the full sermon today.

Do you "suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous Fortune?" That's a tragedy. If our pains have no purpose - or if we don't realize their purpose - then we lose twice. We lose our comfort now, and later we'll miss the benefit that the exercise is designed to produce. Yesterday Pastor Jim began to give us Step 1 to having Hope When it Hurts. We'll rewind a bit, then we'll talk about the sad alternative: what happens if we reject the hope God offers us? We're in Hebrews, chapter 12.

Anyone not experiencing pain right now, raise your hand; we need to pray for you! Happy Monday and welcome to a new sermon, continuing in Hebrews chapter 12, called Hope When it Hurts. I don't have to tell you that pain is part of the human condition. Christians may suffer as much or more than others - but we can have a higher perspective on pain. We know that our troubles aren't just random wounds inflicted by a senseless universe. They have a purpose, and they can ultimately benefit us.
