Signs reassure us! When you're driving in an unfamiliar place - and I think this applies whether you're using the GPS or the "dead reckoning" method of navigation - there's a sigh of relief when you see the road sign you're looking for. "Ah, here's that highway. We're right where we should be." The Bible gives us signs for that same reason: to give us confidence that we're still on course. When is a surprise not a surprise? It's almost impossible to throw some people a surprise party because they're just too observant! "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet...." The psalmist gave us a mental picture of a lamp. Kids, that's like a flashlight that ran on olive oil! In biblical times it was something everyone owned, understood, and used every evening. Did Jesus pick up that symbol of the lamp representing divine revelation when He gave us the Parable of the Ten Virgins? If so, that gives us a clue to interpreting the story. Have we been misreading one of the parables? Jesus' story about the Wise and Foolish Virgins - or the Ten Bridesmaids - may not be about what we think it's about. Yes, it's about being prepared, being ready. It's about a Bridegroom who arrives so much later than we expected, that everyone is caught napping. But who are these ten maidens? The view from the ark isn't pretty. In Noah's day people were getting engaged, taking on mortgages, making retirement plans - when God suddenly ended everything.
