Could something that's never happened, happen? By definition, if something has occurred, we know it can occur. But what about the unprecedented? We have a blind spot in this area, don't we? If something has never happened, in the entire history of the world, it's so unlikely that we'd be safe to think of it as impossible. That's an error that humanity fell into before the Flood. Are you ready for the rain? There was only one way to be ready for the Flood, and that was to get in the Ark. Practicing your swimming "just in case" wasn't going to save anyone. It was the Ark, or death. And the only reason you'd get in that odorous Ark would be if you believed that judgment was coming. Today, as in the days of Noah, there are a few who believe that judgment is coming, and a great multitude who are "living for the weekend" - just like Jesus told us in Matthew 24.
