Pilate sneered, "What is truth?" That must have sounded very cynical at the time. Today people don't even believe in the concept of truth, or they believe in contradictory, private realities. Does this fall in line with Paul's prediction that in the Last Days people will reject the love of truth, and perish? We're closing out our series called The Day of the Lord, and we're in 2 Thessalonians 2. Here's Jim.

Satan wants to erode our hope. The Lord's return is the "blessed hope" that may be the only thing keeping us going, sometimes. And however tough we have it, the Thessalonians certainly had it tougher. It was critical, Paul knew, that they hold on to their confidence. And so he wrote to them, and to us. Today we begin the final lesson in our series, The Day of the Lord. Jim is in 1 Thessalonians 5, verse 2.

Jesus said that the persecuted will be blessed. Paul adds that those doing the persecuting will be punished! Christ will not deal kindly with those who hurt His Bride. And if you don't believe the "gentle Jesus" could ever judge anyone harshly, than you need to read 2 Thessalonians 1. Paul is encouraging that band of believers to keep persevering, and waiting for the great role-reversal to come. We'll repeat part of Friday's program as Jim points out that this "Day of the Lord" was prophesied in the Old Testament.

Christians have always been eager to fit the headlines into biblical prophecy - sometimes too eager! Once we've escaped the big error of saying, "Well, it's been a long time; therefore Jesus isn't coming," we can fall into the opposite mistake of trying to force puzzle-pieces to fit. The Day of the Lord is a day of wrath... but "God has not destined us for wrath." The more closely we read Paul's letters to the church in Thessalonica, the more obvious it becomes that there are two endings to this story. Jesus will intervene twice more in human events, as this age draws to a close. Both of these are in the future, but one may happen at any time. And that should cause us to live differently. "Jesus already came back, and you missed it!" That lie was circulating 20 centuries ago. We've been talking recently about false doctrines that sprang up to corrupt and confuse the early church. And, surprise! they're still around. In order to set Christians straight about the Return of Christ, Paul had to differentiate it from the Rapture.
