"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," goes the famous quote from Santayana. When Paul gets a chance to address a congregation on what some call the "First Missionary Journey," his theme is history - specifically Jewish history: the faithfulness of God and the failures of His people. "But we've always done it this way" wouldn't have seemed like a good argument in the young church. The changes are breathtaking in those early years - God is opening up the church, opening up the ministry, moving, expanding. And the devil isn't doing a very good job of keeping up. Why didn't Jesus answer the Disciples' question about When? ...Or did He? Yesterday we began looking into Acts 1, and the naive but logical question posed by the Eleven: OK, Lord, we've enjoyed all the fellowship with You since Your resurrection; but it's been 40 whole days already. Did Jesus really tell the Disciples that the timing of the Kingdom was none of their business? We tend to read Acts 1:7 like that. "It's not for you to know..." sounds like, "That's above your pay grade." But there's a rich subtext under Jesus' answer - 39 books' worth. Jim begins a sermon called All the Prophets Said.
