We First In A Me First World

"We First" in a "Me First" World. We come to Jesus individually, and that's how it must be. But then we're linked with others in a mystical assembly called, "the Body of Christ." And that's necessary, too - necessary for all that He wants to do through us, and for all that He would like to do in us. We live in a land of rugged individualists, in a time of disconnectedness. That's our culture. And it's often at war with God's purposes.

With Liberty & Justice For All

Two roads diverged.... As we make our way through the mine field of the culture, we could choose to follow the path of the Law, with its comforting guardrails and frequent road signs. Or we could take the less-traveled trail of Love. But is the road of rules and regulations really as safe as it seems? Jim will warn us of a trap there. We're on our way to Understanding the Cultural War.

The Resurrection

Believers are not buried. When a Christian dies, his or her body isn't covered up; it's planted! We are seeds, you see, and God is raising a crop. And it will be a good one! We know the harvest is coming because the "first fruits," Jesus, has already been resurrected. The promise has been fulfilled in our Representative, the process is underway for the rest of us, and it is unstoppable. All of this is important to keep in mind as we're caught in the cultural war.

The Cultural War Is Deceiving

Resurrection is all around you! Almost every plant you see came from a seed - a seed that had to end its existence as a seed, in order to become something greater. But our materialist culture denies the "something greater." It presses us to "live for today," because Tomorrow is a fairy tale. That lie attempts to take God, and our divine purpose, out of the picture.

The Matter Of Headship

Why would God care about hair? Some of us are old enough to remember the 60's, and what a cultural disturbance there was over hair length - mainly the manes of men. Looking back, that silly challenge to norms and traditions seems like the camel's nose in the tent; one of the first shots fired in the cultural war. It wasn't about the hair, after all. And that's a clue to 1 Corinthians 11. Here's Jim to talk about, The Matter of Headship.

The Cultural Wars Are Dishonoring

What is a man? In these strange days when even our leaders aren't sure what a woman is, I guess we shouldn't be surprised that the definition of a man is up for grabs, as well. The anti-Christian ideas permeating our culture have reached their absurd conclusion. And that's causing huge problems for both sexes, of course. But are Christians influenced by some of those ideas, as well? Are our homes built on failed philosophy, or on reality?

The New Creation

We are new creatures... awaiting the new creation! The reason the cultural wars are so intense is because there are two real kingdoms in conflict. And it's an existential battle - there will be no accommodation, no "two-state solution." One of these kingdoms will crush the other. And God's Kingdom is winning! No, it doesn't look that way, but the new creation is growing every day. Let's move over to 2 Corinthians chapter 5 today, for Jim's message.

Cultural Wars Are Not To Be Trivialized

Do the cultural wars really matter? We're not even from these parts; we're just passing through on our way to another Kingdom. Why get involved in squabbles among the natives? It's because, ultimately, cultural wars are about truth - ultimate truth. When you peel back the layers of any given issue, at the root you'll find opposing views of not just morality, but reality. Here's Jim with Part 1 of his sermon, Cultural Wars are Not to be Trivialized.

The Cultural Wars Are Dangerous

"Say it ain't so, Joe." The Chicago White Sox threw - intentionally lost - the 1919 World Series. That earned them the nickname, "Black Sox." One boy, desperate to keep faith in his idol, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, pleaded, "Say it ain't so, Joe." Our actions affect others; and the stakes are higher than we might realize. We're back in 1 Corinthians for the sermon, The Cultural Wars are Dangerous.

When The Cultural War Becomes Intimate - Part 2

Sex is a gift from God. But celibacy is also His gift. Where is that, today? And another question: If the gift of sex can be perverted, and we know it can, can the gift of abstinence also be twisted? What would that look like? Anyone who thinks the Bible isn't relevant to our contemporary life hasn't been with us for our "Cultural War" series. We continue that study today with the second sermon called, When the Cultural War Becomes Intimate.
