When To Be Truly Wealthy - Part 2 of 3

"Now there was a certain rich man...." Thus Jesus opened a parable that's as relevant today as ever. We call it "The Rich Man and Lazarus," and it's the ultimate reversal-of-fortune story. We started to look at it yesterday, with Jim laying some groundwork in Part 1. The context is Jesus' growing feud with the Pharisees, who among their other faults "were lovers of money." The Lord showed them that earthly currency isn't accepted in heaven; it's a whole different economy there. Here's Pastor Jim to continue thinking with us about When to be Truly Wealthy.

When To Be Truly Wealthy - Part 1 of 3

Lots of people want to tell you how to be wealthy. We'll tell you when to be wealthy! Ever since God had blessed righteous men like Abraham and Job with lots of stuff, many people had gotten the mistaken idea that riches are an indicator of God's favor. Today, we often make the opposite mistake and assume that wealth is a sure sign of wickedness. Jesus tried to set the Pharisees straight on this question, and in the process showed us When to be Truly Wealthy.

Lost And Found - Part 3 of 3

There are two lost sons in the story we call the "Prodigal Son." Obviously, the younger brother was selfish, rebellious and foolish - but the older brother, too, was self-centered, not father-centered. He was pathologically unable to empathize with the hurts and joys of others. In the figure of the older brother, Jesus was holding up a mirror to the Pharisees, to the Jews, and to religionists of all times and places. Pastor Jim concludes his sermon from Luke 15, called Lost and Found.

Lost And Found - Part 2 of 3

The Pharisees saw two kinds of people in the world...and Jesus didn't. We may classify people as "good" and "bad," but God sees all of us, initially, as separated. Some will wake up and realize they're estranged from the Father, and some won't. Jesus told 3 parables to help us get our minds rightside-up on this issue. On Friday Pastor Jim took us to Luke 15, and we heard about the Lost Sheep. We'll resume today with a look at the parable of the Lost Coin, and then the Prodigal Son. Here's Jim.

Lost And Found - Part 1 of 3

We might call one lost sheep out of a flock of a hundred an "acceptable loss ratio." God calls it an emergency. Today we're beginning a series focused on Stories and Parables Jesus Told. And our first stop on this journey is really a trio of comparisons showing God's joy at recovering the lost. These stories were pointed at the Pharisees, who apparently saw some people as not worth the effort to save.

Signs Of The End Of The Age

Our study of Jesus' use of parables and figurative language wouldn't be complete without a look at what He said about "the end." The final sermon in our series on Stories and Parables Jesus Told is called, Signs of the End of the Age. And if we're studying "last things" in the Bible, it's easy to get boggled by all the symbols. But if we read carefully, and don't take any sign out of context, things may get a lot clearer. And of course it helps to have someone Jim guiding us through! We'll look at the parable of the Fig Tree and more, on today's Right Start.

The Sheperd

When Jesus said, "I am the Good Shepherd," did His Jewish audience think, "Where have I heard that before?" It's a beautiful picture, the Shepherd and His sheep. But after a lifetime of singing, "The LORD - Yahweh - is my shepherd, I shall not want," did it strike a note of discord to hear this man from Nazareth say, "I am the Shepherd?" We'll learn more about this agrarian analogy, and how Jesus' listeners might have understood it, as we open a message called, The Shepherd.

Jesus' First Parables

What was Jesus' first parable? We know from John what the Lord's first miracle was: the water to wine at the wedding in Cana. John also seems to indicate the first parable, or at least the first time Jesus used metaphor as a teaching tool in His public ministry. And it's a doozy. Typical of the parables that would follow, it was completely obscure to His adversaries. It was, as Pastor Jim will show, a claim to deity. We'll be in John's Gospel, chapter 2, to begin a message called, Jesus' First Parables.

Minas, Vineyards And A Wedding

With every step toward Jerusalem, hopes were rising.... The crowd was expecting something. The Twelve were preoccupied with the pecking-order in the new, messianic kingdom that was just about to be established - as they thought. Jesus knew that that would be in the far future. He told a parable about a master who was going away. The Parable of the Minas (MIH-nuhz) - and if you say "MY-nuhz," that's OK, too - reminds us of the Parable of the Talents, but it has a much sharper edge. Pastor Jim will take us to Luke 19:11, after he opens this new message with prayer.

The Landowner And The Workers

We are too often childish, and too seldom childlike! Lord, you have to do something about this other guy. He's getting a better deal than I'm getting! Or, as Peter put it, "Lord, what about this man?" We're all prone to envy, rather than gratitude. Well, Jesus told a story to shame some of this infantile selfishness out of us. And He told it while was on His way to perform the ultimate selfless act. We'll look at the parable of the Landowner and the Workers in Matthew 20, but first, Pastor Jim will give us some background.
