Living For Whose Pleasure?

What if you had to put all your proposed actions up for a vote? Your choices will now be approved by the committee! Sitting on that board will be your conscience, your family (especially your children), and others who look up to you. And a few strangers. That's not very practical, you're right. But if you're thinking it would infringe on your freedoms, Pastor Jim has a few thoughts he'd like to share with you. They come from Romans chapter 14, and they're presented in a sermon called, Living for Whose Pleasure?

Both: Either's Not Enough

All God's children need principles! We've been studying Romans 14, and how we should handle legitimate differences of opinion on how we interface with the world. At this point we've left the land of laws and rigid rules. But does that mean we have no objective guideposts at all? Today Pastor Jim will show us some principles from this chapter that can serve as our compass. My principles might not be shared by someone else, but they can keep me from going off track.

Conduct Beyond Convictions

It's the carnivores vs. the vegetarians! The early Christians in Rome had a problem. Some wanted to honor God by abstaining from meat and enjoying holy days; others wanted to honor God by doing the reverse. Apparently there wasn't a king-like human authority in the church... in Rome... who could decide the matter for them. To this day similar disagreements continue to give Christians reasons to either judge each other, or accept our differences.

Hope's Hardest Test

We have to get ready for our trip! When you're leaving on vacation or some other journey, you have some things to do: Pack some clothes and other items you'll need, contact someone to care for the pets, set some timers on the lights, tell the neighbors, and more. Well, Christians - all Christians - are going on a trip. It could be tomorrow. Or today. Have we even started our preparations?

Love's Truest Test

As Christians we are free! - but we have obligations. At some point in our journey toward adulthood we figure out that grownups have to pay bills. And those who don't pay what they owe will have a difficult time of it. It's the same on our road to Christian maturity. Along the way, we learn that we have debts. Jim will talk about what those are, in the opening segment of his sermon, Love's Truest Test.

Faith's Toughest Test

If we could distill the entire Bible into one verse, which verse would you choose? Most people would say that John 3:16 is the message of God's Word in miniature: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." But Jim has a different choice! Today he'll defend his selection of Romans 12:21 as the unified message of the Bible. It's a verse that divides all of humanity!

Stretch Your Credibility

When someone gives you hate, can you give them love... and say, "Keep the change?" It's unnatural to bless those who curse you. Or maybe "supernatural" is a better word. In those seemingly rare instances when it happens, the whole world notices. People are forced to come to grips with the fact that there's something else going on here, something more than meets the eye - something supernatural. Pastor Jim's sermon for today and Monday is called, Stretch Your Credibility.

Using Stress To Build Your Faith

Trouble? We eat trouble for breakfast! In Romans 12:12 we see three atmospheres, requiring three different attitudes from us. Trouble, or affliction, is just one of those atmospheres. No one likes difficulties, but they will come. The good news is that we can make our problems serve us. Jim will explain, and he'll walk us through the "Hope" and "Prayer" elements of this verse, as well.

Too Hot To Handle

Don't be a sloth! Romans 12, verse 11 gives us three directives (one "don't" and two "do's"). They have to do with our outer work ethic, our inner state of excitement in the Spirit, and the purpose of it all: to "serve the Lord." A Christian working with diligence will certainly stand out next to someone advocating a 4-day work week and free paid everything, serving only his own comfort. But maybe this message is Too Hot to Handle

Living Respectfully

Do I matter? We all want to know that we have significance, value, worth, even honor. Well, that value was proven at the Cross. We were ransomed with something far more valuable than gold, as Peter writes: with the "precious blood of Christ." But our value isn't of any use hidden under the mattress. This worth is exchanged within the family - by living the faith life with other redeemed ones. Here's Jim to open a sermon called, Living Respectfully.
