When we see someone sacrifice his own needs for the needs of others, we call that, "noble." God calls it, "normal." "Regard others as more important than yourselves." It's not a difficult sentence to translate - it just seems impossible to do! Sure, we know of mothers who subordinate their wants for the sake of their children; soldiers who give their lives for their country. But these are extraordinary cases. How can we live for others all the time? Jim will give us the answer in the final part of his sermon called, Jesus' Humility and Exaltation.

If you're a 5-star General, you don't volunteer to be made a Private. Maybe it's not surprising that the One who "existed in the form of God" could take the form of a mere creature, a mortal, a "slave." Today we're offering a free attitude adjustment! "Have this attitude in yourselves, which was also in Christ Jesus.... " and then Paul goes on to describe a level of humility that's almost beyond imagination. We need to look much more closely at that passage in Philippians, and find out what's really going on there - what's really expected of us. But we'll start in the Gospel of Matthew. We want to control. God wants us to receive. Our pride will never produce humility, and our stubbornness will never grow meekness within us. But that pretty much describes our plan for spiritual growth. Our loving Father has a different plan; one that was designed into us before we were born. Jesus wants to lift your load. The Good News is that God has come to us, to our zip code, to our address. And He hasn't come to beat us down, but to get under our burden and lift it for us - if we'll let it go! Yesterday we began a sermon based on those famous words of Jesus, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." That's very good news, indeed. But there's even more than rest in this new relationship with God.

Everyone loves a good show - especially when there's free food! People were willing to come to Jesus to be healed, to hear a good sermon, and to be fed. But He was interested in meeting their deeper needs - like peace with God, freedom from the yoke of the Law, and inner transformation. And that message was finding a much smaller audience. Today, as we continue to learn about The Righteousness of Jesus Christ, we'll look at the pivotal moment in His public ministry.

Of course Jesus was sinless - He's God! We'll always have an excuse not to live a holy life if we don't understand how much the Word gave up when He became flesh. Jim will show that Christ operated out of the same resources available to us. Let's look again at our model: Jesus, Obedient Worshiper.

What if the preacher gave an altar call...and Jesus came forward? John was blasting sinners and baptizing sinners, and here coming toward him in that long line of lawbreakers was the Lamb. It must have seemed like some kind of mistake: Jesus, being baptized for repentance? Pastor Jim will help us understand the reason for this. We waste so much of our lives on unimportant things. But if we want to be concerned with the concerns of God, we can look at what Jesus cared about. The Lord told his human parents, "Didn't you know I must be about My Father's business?" or "...My Father's things?" Let's stop right there, early in the Gospel of Luke, and ask, "What things?" We're cracking open a new sermon from Pastor Jim today; it's called Jesus, Obedient Worshiper. We'll see that, even before Christ began teaching truth, He was living truth.

Life may be like a box of chocolates, but the Sermon on the Mount is not. In a talk shorter than today's broadcast Jesus gave us the Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer, "Pearls before swine," "Seek first His Kingdom," and many other of our most famous phrases and ideas. But each will be just a random "sound byte" if we don't remember that the big picture is right-wise-ness; or as we pronounce it today, righteousness.
