Rest, then rise. As we wrap up our time with Daniel - this man who stayed faithful to God in a pagan land from his teens, through his old age - we feel the comfort of the words, "Go your way, Daniel; rest. You will rise for your reward." Heaven has given him some nearly overwhelming messages for Israel, and for the world. We're reading one now, in Chapter 11, verse 40. But the final word to him is personal, and reassuring.

Antichrists never win. When a man proclaims himself to be God, he belongs in a mental health facility, not on the throne. But when he rises to a position of power, we can count on two things happening: He'll try to exterminate the Jews, and he will come to a bad end. The prophecy in Daniel 11 fits Antiochus Epiphanes pretty well. And it will fit one more Antichrist as if it were tailor-made. We'll talk about history, and future history today with Jim.

Where's the beef? If you've been studying the book of Daniel with us, you may have noticed that we took a bite out of chapter 10, and then we nibbled at chapter 12. We're missing something in the middle! Just like a hamburger, the important part is what's in between the outer layers! That's where we'll be today; in Daniel 11. The wise will shine! Daniel's supernatural visitor burst into poetry in the middle of his message. "Those who are wise will shine like the bright expanse of the heavens," he said, "and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever." Dark times are certainly coming, but God's people will have insight to illumine themselves, and others. They deal with prayers, and international affairs. Angels and other supernatural beings are real, and they are really involved in what happens in our world. Daniel saw them. He devotes the last 3 chapters of his book to a lengthy prophecy given by a mysterious visitor. And as Jim will show today, his predictions dovetail perfectly with the words of Paul, John and Jude. Sometimes the messenger is more important than the message. Daniel had interpreted the dreams of kings; he had had his own dreams. He had seen visions. He had interviewed angels about the visions. The other time Jesus wept. We remember that the Lord cried in sympathy with the sisters of Lazarus. But Luke records another time that Jesus wept. Don't be alarmed, we're still studying the book of Daniel - specifically the End Times prophecy in Daniel 9. But that investigation has taken us forward in time to Luke 19, and what's known as the Triumphal Entry. We could also call it the "Tearful Entry," because Jesus saw Jerusalem as it would be.

No excuses. When we examine the prayer in Daniel, chapter 9, we see confession, submission, petitions ... but no justifications. No excuses. You were right, God. We were wrong. Yet Daniel had a reason for asking for a blessing he didn't deserve. That reason was a promise in the Scriptures. And another reason: the compassion of God. We're taking another look at this prayer so we can understand the response that's coming.

The exile was almost over. Surely good times lay ahead! God gave Daniel a glimpse of the future, and it wasn't pretty. It contained persecution and "desolations." The man who had been "standing on the promises" for 7 decades was brought low. How could he process the difficult revelations that came to him? We know the answer to that: He prayed.

Well. Here we are. We woke up this morning in the Year of Our Lord 2,025. Did you think we would make it? It's a little surprising to me, I have to say. But God isn't surprised. He has a plan to accomplish His purposes, and He's working that plan. That's what Jim would like to talk about on this New-Year's-Day broadcast as we finish out the sermon, Daniel's Prayer.
