The King And His Critics

Is it lawful to plot murder on Saturday? That's a question Jesus could have asked the Pharisees. They were trying to paint Him into a corner with their question, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" But they had no qualms about conspiring to frame and assassinate a righteous Man - even on the day of rest. (Nice guys, those Pharisees!) As we continue in the Gospel of Matthew, we'll read about both the growing opposition to Christ, and what He did about it. Here's Jim with part 1 of the sermon, The King and His Critics.

Crossroads Of Divine Sovereignty And Human Choice

Jesus taught that God reigns supreme over human events...in such a way that our choices are real, and carry real consequences. Our life here is not a puppet show. But neither is it an "improv" performance, with the outcome unknown. Somehow our theology has to embrace both those truths: God is sovereign; and man does have free will. It's a mystery, but there are plenty of those. The Lord took his audience into the thick of the issue in Matthew, chapter 11.

Are You The One?

We have a piece of information that John the Baptist lacked. Of course the Lord didn't meet the expectations of His enemies. But even His friends were perplexed. The prophets had portrayed Messiah as a triumphant king. At some point Jesus would have to lay down the teaching and healing business, and take up the scepter of power. They didn't understand that that point was still in the distant future. But Jesus did understand. Today we'll hear the first half of the sermon, Are You the One? Pastor Jim opens with prayer.

A Shift In Stategy

The kingdom of God is a living organism - it reproduces itself! During the first half of Jesus' ministry it looked like one Person at the podium, the audience listening - the common teacher/student relationship. But then a switch was thrown. The rest of His earthly campaign would look much different. The Lord would invest some of His trainees with not only His message, but His power. Our journey through the Gospel of Matthew has reached a critical juncture. Here's Part 1 of Jim's sermon, A Shift in Strategy.

Master's Scrapbook

Was Jesus Christ a "superstar?" If you're a compelling speaker and you provide lunch, you're going to draw a crowd. Start healing people - and antagonize the religious elite - and you'll be headline news. But Jesus didn't do any of that to grab the spotlight. He did all of it to demonstrate the heart of God. We start the week with a new sermon in the Gospel of Matthew, called Master's Scrapbook. Here's Pastor Jim.

The Business Of Authority

Like all good preachers, Jesus brought His sermon home with a call to action! The outcasts and the downtrodden are God's favorites. The Law is still in effect, and grace will empower us to live it. Don't turn your religion into a show. Get off the treadmill and seek rightness. Oh, and the Lord's Prayer. These are some of the things listeners heard in the Sermon on the Mount. It was life-changing, world-changing stuff. But as He drew His message to a close, Jesus would charge his audience with living it.

Building A Life Worthy

"Judge not, that you be not judged." It's the favorite saying of Christ among those who don't want to come under the rulership of Christ: "Judge not." But of course it can't mean that we shouldn't call sin, "sin." A few sentences later Jesus tells his followers, "Don't cast your pearls before swine" - requiring us to discern the holy from the unholy, and the worthy from the unworthy. We're continuing our quick survey of the Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew's Gospel. Jim's new sermon is called Building a Life Worthy.

Righteousness: Conduct And Character

Jesus didn't come to lower the bar; He came to lift us over it. As crooked beings we have a hard time imagining what it means to be plumb and level. We are "out of true," to borrow an expression from the tradesmen, and no bent person is able to straighten himself out. So when Jesus started teaching His disciples formally, in public, He started at the beginning. What is righteousness? What does it look like? Here's Jim to open a new message from the Sermon on the Mount. We're in Matthew, chapter 5.

Character Of Kingdom Citizens

If God were to come down and chat with us, we'd expect Him to tell us that we're thinking about some things the wrong way. Well, God did come and talk to us in the person of His Son, and Jesus did try to set us straight about some very basic things. In His famous Sermon on the Mount, He turns a lot of our human values upside-down - or I should say, rightside-up. For example, Who is blessed; it's not necessarily the rich-and- famous. If we listen to Him, we'll get the view from heaven, and eternity. We're in Matthew, chapter 5 today, with Pastor Jim.

Jesus Goes Public

When Jesus launched His ministry, one of the first things He did was bring in some fishermen! The Lord didn't initially recruit theologians, or skilled speakers, or even natural leaders. He began his talent search on the lake. Or rather, on the Sea of Galilee. He wanted some men who lived for a bountiful catch. Today we'll be in Matthew, chapter 4, for the first half of the sermon Jesus Goes Public.
