God's people can thrive, even under ungodly government. Yesterday we began to look at Mark, chapter 12, and the exchange between Jesus and some very strange "bedfellows," the Pharisees and the Herodians. The Lord famously answered them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And that has deep implications for how Christ's followers should conduct themselves in a political system that has little room for Christ.

The church, the state...and money! We can weave sophisticated theories about how to work out our dual citizenship - heavenly, and earthly. But when those theories hit our pocketbook, look out! The Pharisees and the Herodians had surely wrestled with the moral problem of supporting pagan Rome with their taxes. They couldn't answer it. Their mistake was believing that Jesus couldn't answer it.

Jesus made one prophecy that was almost too easy! You don't exactly have to be sync'd up to God's day planner to predict that human monuments will fall. The atheist Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote a classic short poem about that. And to forecast the destruction of the Temple? Well, when Christ came on the scene, the Temple had been razed and rebuilt already. But Jesus got more specific. There has never been a time when good dads were more needed! We started looking at a faith-full father yesterday, as we explored Mark chapter 9. He wasn't perfect; he struggled. To be great, think small! Yesterday Jim contradicted a lot of preachers who say that the Disciples shouldn't have been arguing over "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom?" The Twelve were ashamed to admit their ambition to the Lord. But Jesus didn't scold them for their question; He taught them how to achieve their objective. When Muhammad Ali said, "I am the greatest!" he probably wasn't claiming to be the servant of all. The road to greatness in boxing, or in business, isn't the same as the path to prominence in the Kingdom. On the other hand, they do have similarities. Discipline, for one. There are no baby angels. Angels are not born; they don't have our physical nature. They don't procreate, and they don't marry.
