New High Priest From The Tribe Of Judah

A new Priest, a new law, a new covenant! As we get to Hebrews 7 in our reading, we get the feeling that Paul (or whoever you think wrote the letter) is trying to pulverize any pretext for returning to Judaism. So far he's proven from the Scriptures that Jesus is superior to Moses, to Abraham, even to angels - and he's continuing to elevate Christ above all human priests. Jim's message is, New High Priest From the Tribe of Judah.

We Have This Hope

When is hope more than hope? To the world, a "hope" is little more than a wish. It's a mere desire, perhaps with the tiniest scrap of evidence that the wish could come true. But as believers in the God of the Bible, our hope is much more solid. It's less like steam, and more like steel. Jim will encourage us with some instruction about that, and we'll meet mysterious Melchizedek in today's lesson in the book of Hebrews. Here's Part 1 of the sermon, We Have This Hope.

The Immutable Promise Of God

When God doubled down! A promise from God isn't like one of our human promises. We don't know the future. We don't speak things into existence with our words. When the Almighty promises something, it is real, it is already done; we're just waiting on the shipping! But if God's promise isn't enough for you, He'll put up some security. He'll put some "skin in the game," if you will. Here's Pastor Jim with the first part of his sermon, The Immutable Promise of God.

The Danger Of Defection

Does Hebrews 6 imply that we can lose our salvation? Recently we took the tests in 1 John for knowing whether we're in the Kingdom. But once we're in, can we be out? That's the question that arises when we read the letter to the Hebrews. The author seems to be talking about real Christians - those who have seen the light, who've shared in the Holy Spirit, and then fall away. There's more than good theology at stake! Jim will pray to open his sermon, The Danger of Defection.

About Priestly Things

The problem with priests. The problem is that a priest needs to be holy in order to stand before God - though there is "none righteous." And if such a perfect person existed, he couldn't very well represent us sinners! As we turn the pages of the book of Hebrews we're challenged to think deeply about the Old Covenant system of mediators and sacrifices, and we'll come to the conclusion that it's just not adequate. Jim's talk is called, About Priestly Things.

Our Great High Priest

Jesus not only brought good news; He is the Good News! Christ is the sacrifice for our sins, and the One who offers the sacrifice. We call that one a priest. In this message we'll examine a religious-sounding phrase in the Book of Hebrews: "the Apostle and High Priest of our confession." As Jim will show, there's a lot more action in those titles than meets the eye! Each of those terms is rich with meaning for us. He'll pray to open the sermon, Our Great High Priest.

The Rest That Brings Relief

Rest? What rest?! Most of us live in a perpetual state of near-exhaustion, and we blame it on the pace and stress of modern life. But our ancestors were just as tired as we are - maybe more. Well, in the Bible, God promises rest. And He gives rest. In fact there are several different kinds, or levels, of rest that we should understand. Jim will open with prayer.

The Problem Moses Couldn't Solve

Moses achieved so much that he almost seems super-human to us. And yet, he failed. In his letter to the Hebrews, the author has a tricky task: He isn't trying to take Moses down from his pedestal. But he wants us to look much, much higher - away from the servant of God, and toward the Son. Moses symbolizes an approach to God that ultimately can't work, because of our sinful hearts. Here's Jim to begin his sermon called, The Problem Moses Couldn't Solve.

Faith Is The Reality

You can be sincere, and be sincerely wrong. In our "melting pot" culture we have to manage to get along with others of different faiths, while avoiding the trap of "pluralism" - in the sense of seeing all belief systems as equally valid. I can respect your right to believe, without believing that you're right. The book of Hebrews addresses people who even had the correct God, but the wrong kind of faith. They seemed sincere in their error. Here's Jim, to open with prayer.

The Son - Superior To Angels

Some say that Jesus was a prophet, like Noah. Many other people subscribe to the notion that Christ was a great moral teacher, a godly example, even a philosopher. But the men who knew Him best insist that He is far greater than all of those things. He is the Story. And He is the Author of the story. Jesus is everything. And whatever we do, we mustn't put others on the throne of our hearts. He has earned that place. Jim continues our Hebrews series with a word of prayer.
