Running With The Bulls

"Is not the life of man upon earth a temptation, and that without intermission?" Those opening words from Augustine have us nodding our heads. We feel the pressure all around us, every day, to take a shortcut; to tell a bit less than the whole truth; to feed the flesh, and starve our spirit. Temptation without intermission. It's difficult to run a race with all these distractions. And baggage! We'll talk about both today, as Jim continues in Hebrews 12.

For The Joy Set Before Him

What was "the joy set before" Jesus? In Hebrews 12 we get this instruction: "...looking only at Jesus, the Originator and Completer of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the Cross...." What joy is that? We could try to imagine what it would take to incentivize us to go through utter humiliation, rejection, pain, abandonment and death. Or would anything be worth that? Fortunately, we can get the answer from Scripture.

Faith Is Not Just For The Heavyweights

Who do you think you are? When we gaze at the heroes of faith, as we've been doing, we may hear a voice that sounds like us, saying: "Well, yes, but I'm no Moses. I'm no Abraham. I'm certainly not Christ! How can I have faith like them?" But if we continue reading Hebrews 11 we'll find a Canaanite prostitute. Suddenly the example is a little more down-to-earth. Rahab and her household were saved from destruction by faith.

Faith Is A Choice

Moses chose. If we have no free will, as some insist, what does the Bible mean that Moses "chose...to suffer affliction with the people of God?" In fact, the passage of Hebrews 11 that we'll study today shows that Moses made several bold decisions. The sermon is called, Faith is a Choice. But we'll begin with a few minutes on "current events" in light of prophecy.

Faith Is Living In Illusion

Are we hallucinating enough? If you see things that aren't there, that isn't good; we need to get you checked out. But what if you see things that really are there, though others can't see them? They'll probably say you're hallucinating - or worse. Faith will allow us to see all kinds of things that are there. And that will get us in trouble. As if to illustrate, Jim will show us a pair called Amram and Jochebed in Hebrews 11. They're not listed in the text. But they're there. They're Moses' parents.

Death Has No Power Over Enduring Faith

In our "instant gratification" culture, Christians need to be the counter-culture. We want one-minute rice, same-day delivery, and even a 90-day fiancée. Our society is surely the most impatient bunch ever to walk the earth. But, as you may have noticed, God is not in a hurry. And if we wish to follow Him, we'll have to learn patience - learn it, because we don't yet know it. Jim will help us take the long view in his sermon, Death Has No Power Over Enduring Faith.

Faithful Rocking Rules The World

If you see a very old lady in the checkout line with a cart full of diapers and baby food, that's just Sarah! The aged wife of Abraham, taking Lamaze classes - that's funny. She was the first to laugh, and we're still chuckling at God's sense of humor. Sarah's name appears in the list of the faithful in Hebrews 11, representing all the women who advanced Heaven's plan because of their belief. Jim's sermon is called, Faithful Rocking Rules the World. He'll open it with prayer.

Longing For A Heavenly City

Noah believed that the Flood was coming, but he believed in something else, too: life after the flood! Noah is one of two men of faith we'll look at, today. The other is Father Abraham. His inner eyes saw even farther - beyond his own lifetime, and even past us! Noah was just trying to find a patch of dry dirt. Abraham was looking for a heavenly city! Here's Jim to open with prayer.

Faithful But Not Finished

"Now, faith is..." - that sounds like we're going to get a definition, doesn't it? The King James reads: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." But it's hard to understand what that could mean. More recent translations propose, "...the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Perhaps the key to understanding this statement is to remember that we're not reading a dictionary! Here's Jim with Part 1 of his sermon, Faithful, But Not Finished.

Don't Throw Away Your Confidence

The devil gets very chatty with us in the desert. You've done the right thing, you've obeyed God - you've paid the price for that - and now you're waiting. It feels like you're in a dry wasteland. And just like Jesus' wilderness temptation, Satan is speaking. But where is God? The "Hebrews" addressed in the New Testament letter had the same problem we have: a long, painful gap of time between the performance of their faith, and the reward.
