Crime does not pay. "Let God arise!" the people of Israel used to sing. "Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee before Him," is the rest of the verse from Psalm 68. Killer angels. There was an award-winning book about the Civil War called The Killer Angels. But the bloody battle of Gettysburg is nothing compared to the one that will commence at the river Euphrates: Four angels, 200-million cavalry, resulting in the slaughter of a third of the world's population. When you hear these trumpets, it's too late! We get the sense, reading Revelation, that God isn't commanding new judgments to fall on the Earth; we don't hear Him pronouncing them. Instead, the punishment for man's rebellion has been "stored up," and is now being released, in stages. These trumpets are not for celebration! The Christians who first read John's Revelation had heard trumpets in various roles, like announcing a festival, warning of danger, proclaiming Roman dominance. The seven trumpets we'll read about today are ominous, official, and final. The Earth is about to change owners. And the wicked of the Earth are about to face the music.
