The simplicity, the scope, the lack of fine print on that promise are stunning. It's the subject of Peter's first sermon. Luke has given us highlights in Acts, chapter 2. And the miracles that follow are unsurpassed, as well!

Meet the Holy Spirit! If the third Person of the Trinity seems veiled in mystery, that's understandable. After all, there's plenty about God the Father and God the Son in the Bible, and not very much directly about God the Holy Spirit. That's all the more reason to read deeply and carefully the verses that we do have about Him. And the book of Acts is a focal point of those. Some have noticed that Luke's second book isn't really about the Acts of the Apostles, but the Acts of the Holy Spirit.

We can only "work out" what the Spirit has dropped in! "Power from on high!" That's one of the phrases Jesus used to predict the arrival of the Holy Spirit to His followers. And sometimes when we read Acts, chapter 2, we can be wowed by the demonstration of that power. But God's purpose isn't just to amaze us. It's to use that energy to transform us from the inside out. Some profess Christ without the Spirit of Christ. The "missing ingredient" for many folks today is the same thing the Apostles didn't have... for a while. Jesus had told them not to try to fulfill the Great Commission on their own, but to "wait for the Promise of the Father." That promise was power, in the Person of the Holy Spirit. Today we begin a new series in the book of Acts. As distant as first-century Jerusalem may seem to us, it might start to look pretty familiar.

The devil used persecution to stop the gospel. Apparently he didn't know that persecution would spread the gospel. The Growing Church had problems, because growth brings problems, but it also had Satanic opposition. Jesus had prophesied, "...the time is coming that whoever kills you will think he offers a service to God," and that time had come very quickly. As the believers scattered, they kept telling the good news to whoever they came across.

The church in Jerusalem had aced its first test. Ethnic tensions are eased, new believers are streaming in - and the devil decides to get violent. In our study in the book of Acts we've seen a Spirit-inspired solution to a problem that could have split the assembly along racial lines. It must have been a great time for the church. Even Jewish priests are converting. But Satan sees that his kingdom is in peril. He doesn't start with small weapons; he's about to rain death on believers, beginning with the beloved Stephen.

The early church had some conflicts to resolve - just like we do. In the book of Acts we see God working supernaturally through people by His Spirit, but we also see humans being humans, with all their personal quirks and prejudices. They had no precedents to help them solve their problems, they had no infallible man to dictate a course of action. Luke records the messy but glorious way they made those first, crucial decisions.

"The graveyards are full of indispensable men." The author of that quote is hard to pin down, but the New Testament's Barnabas certainly lived it: He saw himself as a tool in the hand of the Master, nothing more. When others got promoted over him, he kept on encouraging and edifying people - because that was the Spirit that was in him. If the fruit of the Spirit is gentleness, then why do we see so many un-gentle Christian leaders? Gentleness is another quality that shines through the biblical description of Barnabas. He was humble enough to step aside as Paul took the spotlight in their ministry. What had started out as "Barnabas and..." became "Paul and...," seemingly without any protest or hurt feelings.
