The Peril Of Drifting - Part 2 of 2

We sometimes say that Christianity is not a religion; it's a relationship. Well, a relationship has to be kept up! A believer walking in sin isn't walking with Jesus - that relationship is in trouble. It may even end. The writer of the book of Hebrews isn't concerned with our theological boxes. He's telling us what we know to be true: that to start with Christ is not necessarily to end with Christ. Pastor Jim completes his sermon in Hebrews 6 today, in Part 2 of The Peril of Drifting.

The Peril Of Drifting - Part 1 of 2

Is it possible for someone "once enlightened" to fall away? The writer of Hebrews gives us the disturbing answer: Some people who have started to walk with Christ haven't finished. They've turned from His path before they completed the journey. We'll have to fit that into our theology however we can, but his warning remains clear: we'll inherit the promises of God only by faith...and patience. Today, as we continue our short series in Hebrews, Jim has a new message for us, called The Peril of Drifting.

Problems In The Nursery - Part 2 of 2

Have you brushed up on your "ABCs" lately? No, you're probably writing a lot of emails, texts and other messages without any refresher courses in the letters and numbers. Those elementary lessons can be left behind. But the writer of Hebrews chastised his readers for being stuck in kindergarten because of their infatuation with the Law, the tutor that was to lead them to Christ. Yesterday we began the message, Problems in the Nursery. Today Jim will show us 5 ways to grow out of spiritual diapers.

Problems In The Nursery - Part 1 of 2

Something's wrong in the nursery! Today Jim will open a sermon called Problems in the Nursery, and I think the main problem is that we have 45-year-olds in the cribs! It's a comforting place, the nursery, with no responsibilities and everyone catering to our needs. But it's a dangerous place to stay, or to return to, spiritually speaking. For our own sake, as well as for the sake of the kingdom of God, the writer of Hebrews will tell us to "Grow up!" Pastor Jim's message is taken from Hebrews, chapters 5 and 6.

The Ultimate Insider - Part 2 of 2

Since Jesus never sinned, we may think He really doesn't know what it's like to be fully human. Let's not forget that the Lord was "made sin" for us. He suffered the full effects of alienation from God, and even abandonment, on the Cross. Yes, He has felt what sin does. So He can represent us before the Father - but does He have the "credentials," as Jim put it on Friday? We'll back up into that broadcast a bit so we can get a running start at this mystery of Jesus as The Ultimate Insider.

The Ultimate Insider - Part 1 of 2

Job cried, "For He is not a man, as I am, that I may answer Him, and that we should go to court together. Nor is there any mediator between us, who may lay his hand on us both." We're back in the book of Hebrews for a new series, but I quoted Job because he stated the problem perfectly: Any arbitrator between God and man would have to understand the viewpoint of a perfect being, and also understand the viewpoint of - well, us. We need The Ultimate Insider.

The Danger Of Knowing The Truth

We discussed "drawing near" now we need to talk about "shrinking back." As we open our final sermon in this series, the author of Hebrews has a warning for us. It's possible to take God's grace for granted, and to get ourselves so completely turned around that we actually become His adversaries again. And when we disregard the blood of His Son like that, the Father takes it personally. The writer uses the words like "outrage" and "indignation." Here comes another Christmas reference as Pastor Jim speaks on, The Danger of Knowing the Truth.

Let Us Draw Near To God

Our greatest need...is God's greatest desire for us. A close relationship with our Creator - that's the deep human deficit that He wants to fill. In fact, you could say that He has spent His greatest Treasure on just the possibility of reestablishing a loving connection with us. In chapter 10 of the book of Hebrews the author urges us to do 3 things that will move us toward maturity in Christ. And the first one is to draw near to God. Today we'll hear Part 1 of a sermon preached around Christmastime.

How Jesus' Sacrifice Saves

In Old Testament times, as today, a lot of people were on a religious hamster wheel. There's a lot of activity, but no progress. The author of Hebrews makes an ingenious argument in Chapter 10: If the animal sacrifices and the Temple rituals could really make us acceptable to God, why did the priests have to keep doing them? All that repetition doesn't make us saints; it just reminds us continually that we're still sinners! Today Pastor Jim begins a new sermon entitled, How Jesus' Sacrifice Saves.

To Clean Up The Mess

Which would you rather have: external rules, or access to the living God? Oh, you can go back to circumcision and a kosher diet and Sabbath restrictions if you want to. But under that system, the average person could not approach God - not directly. Even the priests couldn't enter His presence, except one man, once a year. The Temple itself seems to be designed to show us how unholy we are. Pastor Jim adds another entry to his Hebrews series today with Part 1 of, To Clean Up the Mess.
